Guinea pig food

Can anyone recommend a food that doesn't end up with half of it being ignored and thrown out to the birds/rodents in the garden, who also won't touch it!

My two were brought up with Pets at Home muesli, and the nuggets. Then PaH in their infinite wisdom decided to change the mix and then my two wouldn't eat it. Since then, I've tried them on Wagg, Gertie, and various other shops' own mixes, and there is always at least half of it they won't touch. Most of these foods seem to be bulked out with Alfalfa pellets, and I've yet to find anything that will eat them, none of my previous Guineas (I've had about 20 over the years) Rabbits, Mice, Hamsters, Rats, and mice in the shed won't touch them either. Also the things that look like cornflakes get left, so basically all they are eating from any mix is the green flaked peas and the biscuity type things. My two get loads of veggies every day so the Vitamin C thing isn't an issue with them really.

Basically, apart from the nuggets (which mine also won't eat) does anyone make a food without the alfalfa and other type of pellets?

My rabbits and guinea-pigs have always been quite fussy with food, for the guinea-pigs my mum used to get one from either asda's, sansburys or tescos (orange bag cant remeber what its called) and they really liked that one and didnt leave as much

You're supposed (apparently) to buy the stuff that is just pellets - so they're all the same.

I buy a bag of that and mix it up with somethng from my local pet shop which I think is Gerty Guinea Pig.

GGP is apparently not that fantastic ... but ...

I've tried loads of different foods with my lot over the years. I have finally got them onto Oxbow Cavy Cuisine pellets - they aren't mad on it, but dried food should only be making up about 5% of their diet anyway (approx 80% hay, 15% veg/grass/green foods).

If your lot refuse any sort of pellets, the Tescos purple bag mix isn't too bad.

Thanks everyone, I will try them on a few of the suggestions here, as I say they get broccoli, carrot, baby corn, tomatoes, cucumber and celery every day, plus an unlimited supply of hay so they aren't going hungry. Maybe I will try them back on the nuggets. Just worry about their teeth overgrowing if they don't eat enough hard biscuity-type food. I lost a gp a few years back because he stopped eating and his teeth overgrew at the back.

Hay and grass will wear their teeth down more than food. It's what they eat in the wild.

Yes, I agree with that. Because of the fibrous nature of hay, it causes their mouths to chew in the correct side to side motion, wearing down the teeth, so as long as your pigs eat plenty of hay they should be OK with their teeth.

guinea excel is said to be the best - its pellets so they can't be fussy
plus lots of hay
mine also love readigrass

Excel is actually alfalfa-based (like most pellets), but Oxbow Cavy Cuisine is timothy hay-based. Alfalfa has too much calcium for adult guinea pigs. Also, a lot of pigs seem to hate Excel - I know mine always have! It's better than a mix for them though - Pets at Home nuggets are virtually the same as Excel, I think.
