Shamed ex rocker Gary Glitter has caused outrage, as he is to receive £100,000 from an advertising firm for using one of his songs in their new advert.

Well, obviously I think he's subhuman scum, but I don't think you can do much about him getting paid for his own work.

Have to question the morality of the firm who used his music though, and tell them what dicks they are.

The guy is a dick who doesn't deserve the time of day, but it is his work and so he should get paid for the use of it.

My question is why on earth is an advertising firm using his music in the first place

His song "Do you want to touch me" is to be used in an advert for computers apparently.

Good question! I don't think it is a big push to their image but it will may work the other way around.
First the people find out the company playes the music of Glitter and than they would reject their products.

Hardly his fault is it? Someone should ask the advertising firm why they are using his song though.

I thought he sold the rights to his back catalogue just before he was outed as a nonce? He received somehting like 2 million for it. Or does he still get "performance" royalities? If this is the case, why don't they just get someone to re-record the track and he'll have nowt.

More importantly, why with about 10 million songs to choose from did they choose one by possibly the only convicted paedophile?

That's what royalties are for. Not Glitter's fault if someone uses his tunes.

Doesnt matter who records it, Glitter would still get the majority of the royalties as songwriter

They were going to use a cover version done by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in 1982. It's highly likely the ad men had never even heard of Glitter as he never made it in the States, they just knew the song from the cover version.

Out of interest, though, if Glitter doesn't deserve a penny in royalties, should the likes of John McVicar or Jeffery Archer continue to get royalties as well? After all they are both convicted criminals as well.....

Odd that no controversy was caused when Fosters used Jonathon King's Hit "let it all hang out" to promote Fosters Twist - this ad is still being shown in the UK as far as I know

Should a song by Gary Glitter be used to promote computers - especially bearing in mind what he kept on his? Probably not.

If, however, such a song is used then should he, as the song writer, get royalties? Absolutely.
