Apparently Simon Cowell has approached the BBC with a view to resurrect TOTP.

I think that it is a show that is needed, but in a format that would make it attract viewers more so than it did previously.

My only thought would be if it would be utilised to his advantage wherever possible. It seems obvious to me that priority would be more likely given to artists on Syco Sony/BMG books when it came to promoting new releases. I know that they are a very large group of companies but I wonder how much room there would be for others not connected to them.

The chart would not be affected because that would have to reflect the weekly sales, but there certainly would be a lot of room for manoevre on the new singles promotion front!

Well pop has so few outlets these days on telly, I think Simon realises this, so it's self serving in a way, I do miss TOTP.

Is he just talking of Xmas show though?

They should never have axed it.

You should all blame Andy Peters, he single handedly brought down TOTP from the inside. He replaced a format that worked for over 30 years with some jumped up trendy nonsense that was targetted at too niche a demographic.

Take the show 1 of 2 ways:

1) Back to how it used to be just playing out the songs that have charted each week
2) Move it into the 21st century by mixing new releases with songs that have just charted and live lounge style covers

Both could IMO work. The first worked for over 30 years, the second would appeal to younger people today as Radio 1's Live Lounge is very popular with younger people

If the BBC don't want it anymore and Cowell does pick it up, it could be perfect for ITV2 (weekly) and ITV1 on Christmas day. If he does pick it up, it probably won't be on BBC1 or 2 again.

If they did bring it back they should just have acts that are IN THE CHARTS on

not as a promo programmme for acts before their release

I completely agree, they should only have acts in the chart performing. That means that it's music that the public like which gets played.

Friday evenings...yes

7.30pm...NO!! it'd clash with corrie which may not do the ratings any favours and may lead to it being axed again-and some of us would like to watch both

Claudia Winkleman...are you mad??? couldn't stand the woman when she had that massive fringe and now the fringe is gone and you can see her face she's even worse!

If he brought it back it would just be another step towards him gaining world domination. Mind you if he brought it back I wouldn't mind seeing this act again Wonder Dog.

The winner and finalists are likely to feature anyway (if it goes ahead) for christmas #1 and best selling single of the year (though Duffy may be too far ahead). And Leona is hard to ignore.

It would be interesting to see what he would do with it. There is no doubt that it had aged and was totally out of date by the time it finished. At least it won't be Tim Kash hosting the new one, Syco will at least get hold of some good presenting talent. He can also think as a TV producer, hence why the past 2 X Factor finals have featured Take That and Kylie Minogue, neither signed to Syco or Sony.

I'm surprised he is interested, tbh. It might just be a personal interest because a one-off Christmas special is hardly going to make him the money of Got Talent, X Factor, Idol or even Grease Is The Word. Unlike the last one, ITV haven't asked for TOTP either, so it just seems alot of hassle with very little time and an awful lot of other things to be done.

It would need a spectacular reception to get a proper commission, and I can't see it doing all that well. Jools Holland Live on BBC2 isn't setting the world alight.

And then returning it as a series is a nightmare challenge. Nobody could turn it around on BBC1 as it became rapidly out of date. I'm not really sure how much it can be updated. How can it appeal to the same audience that watch XF?

Better presenters? First play performances? Special performances? Exclusive interviews? Any new features?

I am so pleased. I don't want Simon to have any more influence on the industry.

And I don't like how BBC tries to rule the biz..
Awful radio stations, horrible presenters and no morals.
Having Simon digging up TOTP xmas would have done them good. Not to mention he's paying for it himself.

No morals, LOL, they are not the only ones.

Well, may be neither the BBC nor Simon should rule the biz..
