Tunes in 5 time
dvboy
09-10-2003
I just heard the theme from the Canterbury Tales on BBC One and noticed it was in 5 time i.e. 5 beats to the bar, and it got me wondering what else is in five time?

The ones I can think of are:

Take 5 (Glenn Miller)
The Mission Impossible Theme

Any more?

There's a well known rock/pop song in 5/4, but I can't remember it! I'll have to get my thinking cap on.

On a slightly different, but related note, the Celine Dion track 'A New Day Has Come' is in 3/3 on her album, but the tempo was changed to 2/4 for the single version.

It's all interesting stuff

Also I like the Avalanches album on which they mix from 4 time to 3 time and back into 4.

Phil Collins' track 'Dance Into The Light' sounds like 5/4 to me, but upon closer inspection it isn't, it's just 3/3 (which is still unusual for a pop/rock track).

Have a listen and tell me you agree, please (just to confirm my view that it doesn't sound like a standard time signature upon first listen, although it actually is!).

I think it's just because of where he places his emphasis.

I'll have a listen but 3/3 is a VERY unusal time signature.

It's more likely to be 3/4 or 6/8.

I've had a listen and my conclusion is that neither of those - it's in 3/2 or 6/4 (depending on whether you reckon it's 3 slow beats to a bar or 6 quicker beats with the emphasis on 1st, 3rd and 5th). I'm going for 3/2.

The old theme tune from The Bill was in 7/4 then switched to 4/4. Strange one.

Not doing very well with your 5/4 request so far. Probably a few jazz songs in 5/4 but I know f**k all about jazz.

Yes, obviously I meant 3/4 whenever I said 3/3 - it's been one of those days!

Well I'm still gonna say it's in 3/2
