If simon is trying to mode Austin into David Cook
Then Austin's chances of having a career in America will be zero as he will just be seen as a copycat

I think that Austin is failing to attract the female interest that is expected from a young good looking male contestant, like Leon, Rhydian, Shayne, David Cook, David Archuleta, Michael Johns etc... I won't list them all... and Simon is going to give up on him soon...

Austin is good but not working out exactly how Simon wanted him too IMO. If he was in the show last year he would have won without a doubt.

If he's trying, and yes, I'm fully expecting Austin getting ABMB, David's arrangement, if there is a Mariah week, he'll fail because Austin has a completey different voice and vocal style to David.
But given Mr Cowell's oh so vast musical knowledge (and yes, I am being sarcastic) I wouldn't put it past him, and he's lining Austin up for an epic fail if he does. There is a market for Austin, but it's not the same as Cook's. |

He looked much better before simon restyled him, he needs to go back to his old style that emo thing looks stupid. He will get more girl attention that way.
Laura needs to back to her old style as well. hate the styling they do oin xfactor its so dated! Hes much better than eggnog so i hope he doesnt get thrown to the side line. Eoghans being bigged up more. |

He could never again criticize anyone for being predictable .. or could he...

Music wise I think not. A lot of people see Austin as a pop singer because he was in a boy band when he was a teenager. But more recently Austin was in a glam rock band which did Bolan/Mud/Bowie stuff. They guy can play guitar quite well and also with another band he did blues/classic rock/soul stuff and I think this is a kind of music he really likes. So I don't think that Simon try to mode Austin into David Cook because rock music is natural choice for Austin.
Have you seen him performing his own song? It was two yearsago btw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLrMEAT4GSQ&NR=1 I would be very surprised if he released a total pop album. He is too versatile to do it. |

I agree, I don't think that he is trying to make him be anyone else. I think that he is using the AI music because it is an easy thing to do, that's all..

I wonder why he did not get past bootcamp last year ![]() Simon is very easy to read. He has Shayne for the pop/r&b type of market, so I doubt he'd want another..it did occur to me that a 'David Cook' type was a niche that Simon does not have in his Syco stable....but would that type of artist do well in UK? |

Their voices are very different, but I'd say Austin is similar to Rod Stewart in that he suits rock/soul/blues and can perform both solo and as part of a band.

![]() Article from Itv: Quote:
ITV.COM (October 2008)
If you really want something, and we’re talking really, really here; then a year can be a hell of a long time to wait. But that’s exactly what Essex lad Austin Drage has had to do, after his X Factor dream ended at bootcamp last year. He’s back this time around and is absolutely determined to fulfil his potential and achieve his goals of becoming a successful popstar. Last year Austin’s commitment and desire were called into question by the judges. They claimed he didn’t ‘want it’ enough, and left him heartbroken when they told him he hadn’t made it to the judges’ houses. “Although I did really want it last year, I was playing it cool, a bit like the way you do when you really fancy someone.” Said the 22-year old: “But I ended up playing it so cool that I came across as undeserving, like I wasn’t bothered either way.” Austin admits that was a big mistake on his part and he is determined to make a good impression with the judges this time round. “Last year I came home and had a good old cry. My parents saw how much it meant to me, I was miserable for weeks afterwards, so I want to make this one my year. I’m back bigger, harder, stronger, faster!” |

Hardly. He was given one David Cook-like song to sing that was Chris Cornell's version of "Billie Jean". As soon as there was a Michael Jackson night, it was always going to feature. I don't think it it was specifically selected for Austin, someone was always going to sing it and he was the most obvious candidate.
And "Mack The Knife" and "Every Breath..." aren't impersonating David Cook. And Austin certainly won't be getting a US release, he might not even get a record deal. |

I dont see how Simon can try and make Austin into the next David as Austin can not carry Davids style as they have different vocals.
David is more Rock Austin is more Pop. But if Simon makes Austin do the same arrangement on ABMB as David, then he is making a big mistake imo. And it would be unfair to Austin for him trying to make him be like David. |

David is more Rock Austin is more Pop. He is not pop. Check some youtube videos of him performing Free, Bad Company, Stevie Wonder..... if you don't believe me. And not all rock singers have raw low voices. What about Jeff Buckley for example - Fantastic angelic pure voice he had and was brilliant rock singer. |

![]() Somehow that has escaped me so far (as an Austin fan)..I had no idea he could sing falsetto too! Great, thanks ![]() I wish Simon would choose a song for him to really show off his vocal range. |

I think Simon is making mistakes with Austin.
This guy is good, very good. He can play guitar, he can write his own material why not show him off. It baffles me it really does. The kid's really grown on me.

He's a slow burner in this competition, gaining more respect and more fans every week.
It's still treading a fine line with him though...Cowell needs to be so careful. I don't want him to be the Shock Early Exit but it is a distinct possibility. However, win or lose, Austin is showcasing his talents and I hope he gets a record deal out of it, preferably with some freedom to develop his career the way he feels best suits him and his musical preference. We all know that's a hard thing to do in this day and age, but not impossible, and he seems a very determined young guy. |

Could he be the dark horse in this competition, with Simon purposely holding him back so that he is not bunt out too early?

He is too versatile to do it. Austin is obviously more versitile then we've so far seen, but where David had the massive advantage on Idol, being able to choose (albeit from a set list) his own songs and arrange them to suit himself and so was able to show what he could do and his range, Austin has to go with what Cowell picks and Cowell has a hugely limited musical knowledge and isn't even particularly a music fan, so Austin is immediately hamstrung by Simon's limitation and lack of imagination, and doesn't get to show what he can actually do, which from that brief listen sounds a damm sight more interesting then anything Simon's got him to do so far. |
