how specific does a song have to be to fit into the sound or genre??? what year bracket???

You could argue that songs from nowadays that are played in discos could be used...Therefore we could see alot songs that you'll hear at EVERY DISCO (which includes the likes of Girls Aloud, Bryan Adams, Grease, Y.M.C.A, Whitney Houstan, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner etc.)

Is Disco actually a relevant theme for the 21st century.........I don't think so.

I'm sure there's no strict rules. Last year Same Difference did 'Reach' by S Club 7 on Big Band night for example.

Thats abit of a vague description, I didn't know "disco" was actually a genre of music............I've always considered more of an Era.

Year bracket is mid 70s - early 80s. By 1980, it pretty much died in the US but survived for a few more years here in Europe as "Italio Disco" (don't expect to hear any Italio tomorrow night). Disco's major lasting impact is that it was the birth of electornic dance music. House, Trance, hardcore and hip-hop owe their existance to disco. The general sound is danceable songs with heavy soul and funk influences and more complex instrumentation than later dance music, the electronic sound came a bit later.

Some examples:
Hues Corporation - Rock the Boat - One of the first disco songs to get to number one in the US charts (1974)
Donna Summer - I Feel Love - Hugely influential track. Possible the first ever pop song with an entirely synthesized backing track (1977)
The Rolling Stones - Miss You - As discor became massive, many non-disco acts jumped on the bandwagon and used disco in their own songs. This is a rahter ghastly example of that. (1978)

As an aside, It's Raining Men is not a disco song so if anybody sings that, feel free to facepalm.

Is it still relevant? No but then neither is Big Band night.
