Just to pick up on a comment that someone made in the reviews of last week's show:

I can't help think when I watch DWTS that some of the pros and celebs on SCD should take notice of what an effort most of the couples put in on DWTS.

I don't know anything about dancing, but most of the DWTS routines are more exciting to watch than those on SCD....

Clearly the budget for costumes is higher in the USA so that adds to the overall impression of performances too....
Absolutely agree that many of the dances on DWTS are more exciting and dramatic to watch than SCD. I posted a couple of threads on SCD citing the sambas we saw one week, and another about pasos. And I had the feeling that it was in part, due to a lack of commitment/complacency by the celebs/pros on SCD. It would improve standards if they were to watch DWTS. Perhaps there should be more movement of pros between the 2 programs, both ways. Completely new blood, like Lacey from a slightly different background, also invigourates a show.

This week's show:

Maurice and Cheryl - VW
A very out-of-character dance for Maurice, but he did a respectable job. Cheryl choreographed some nice fluid-body moves for herself.

Lance and Lacey - Jive
They both really enjoyed doing this. The dancers' enjoyment of the dance is always infectious and, I think, is a big component in making viewers want to vote for a couple [contrast with Mark and Hayley].

No showing off by Lacey, and the kicks were well-synchronised (she could have made hers sharper, but restrained herself).

The jive suits Lacey's "chunky" body shape well too.

Susan and Tony - Mambo
Not sure what to look for in mambo. Seems like a restrained/controlled salsa.

Didn't find this performance very exciting. In some of the side-by-side moves Susan's footwork seemed all over the place.

Michael Flatley's comments were ridiculous: "[start small voice]there might have been errors... but you were intoxicating... dont ever change[end small voice]"

Brooke and Derek - Rhumba
Loved the dress.

Felt this was a bit over-acted, at the expense of smoothness.

MF also called this dance intoxicating.

Cloris and Corky - Cha Cha
The standard of the dance was so dreadful, the sort of thing that wouldn't normally survive week 1.

I did think the end, where she was rolling on the floor, was funny.

Overmarked. Wonder what score Craig would have given this - zero - do they have a zero paddle.

Cody and Julianne- Samba
Found this disappointing. Seemed to lack rhythm and joyousness, for me. Didn't think it was as good as Brooke's samba from a couple of weeks ago.

Not Julianne's normal standard. Suspect she had more worrying things on her mind.

Warren and Kym - Rhumba
Not sure how good this was technically. But the performance was convincing, almost entrancing. I suppose a large body mass inevitably makes movements smoother.

Group Hip Hop
Cloris looked hilarious. Think that image just about typified the whole thing. Susan and Brooke didn't want to be there. Lance and Lacey seemed to enjoy themselves.

Wasn't too keen on having so many different dances in one show. I suppose it makes for a more spectacular and varied show to watch for most viewers. But it makes comparisons between the couples (and therefore the marking) a lot more difficult.

Michael Flatley
Didn't think much to him - a bit bland and characterless. Did he actually make any specific technical criticisms of any of the dances.

Incidentally, the shows are also being repeated on Saturday mornings, starting at 10.45am on Watch (Sky 109), and starting at 11.45am on Watch+1 (Sky 155).

I thought last nights' show was very disappointing. Most of the dances were poor, and were more of the quality expected in the 1st or 2nd week, not halfway through the show. Lance deserved to be top, but even his jive was not that good - in fact technically, it was dreadful.

I agreed with Cloris leaving, but was sorry in a way as she was the only one who added a bit of entertainment to the show.

This whole series seems to lack the energy, excitement and OTT enthusiasm of all the previous series.

I thought the show was very disappointing and I did miss Len - Michael Flatley was just waste of space.

None of the dances excited me really, but I enjoyed Lance & Lacey's jive and I've not realy taken to them before now. Warren & Kym's Rumba was nice, but something was missing - I'd love him to win.

Thank goodness Chloris has gone as I really didn't find her funny at all. There is no doubt she is in fantastic shape, but she took all the slap stick she is famous for too far and was OTT every week. If only she could have channelled all that energy into her dancing!

I recorded the show as I was working and was glad to have a fast forward button for the results show![/quote]

Thank god Cloris has gone is all I can say - yes she was funny to an extent but she didn't know when to stop and Corky must have had the patience of a saint to put up with it.

I think the reason that the dances in DWTS seem more interesting and exciting than SCD is that the american pro's have a much wide scope of steps to work with. In SCD we stick to the traditional as much as possible - ie all ballroom dances with the exception of of the AS must be in hold at all times, the men wear tails or lounge suits etc etc whereas the americans often go for more outlandish costumes and don't follow the traditions as closely as we do - I mean, their Viennese Waltz's are hardly what we'd call a VW over here - half a dozen steps in hold and in the right sequence and then they're out of hold and dancing a more classical Waltz.

I too record it and use the FF button, never was I as thankful for this as this week - MF what a waste of space!
