Connecting optical audio cable to new TV

I have a SkyHD box and a PS3. I used to have to change the optical audio lead depending on which piece of equipment I was using.

Today I got a Sony KDL-40W4000 and I see it has a Optical Audio out at the back

As I am connecting my PS3 and SkyHD box to the TV via HDMI, will the TV output these sources with 5.1 via the socket at the back? Or is that socket only for use with 5.1 terrestrial broadcasts - if and when they come?!

It certainly won't output Sky in DD5.1 - seeing as the HDMI cable doesn't carry a DD signal from Sky anyway. Only optical out of Sky carries DD. Might carry optical from DVD - try it and see. Digital terrestrial TV is unlikely to carry a DD5.1 signal for a long time...

Most tvs only output stereo over the Optical output. You really need a direct optical connection to your amp for 5.1 from sky.
