Personally I think there is a lot to be said for both sides of the argument, the main thing to take into account is the personality of the dog and owner and tailoring any work to accommodate both. You cannot treat a timid, retiring dog the same as one who is upfront and sure of themselves. Most people do not have a pack of dogs but just one or two, and observation of how they interact is the key to any training.
Sorry I am going on a bit, but it really annoys me in any training class when the person in charge has one way of doing things and does not take all the variables into account.
As you are just starting out I would say that your eyes and ears are the best tools and to observe your clients thoroughly and how they interact, there is no one way to do things, training is an art not a science.
