What Film
After getting a 37" Sony Bravia I got a reasonably priced Sony BDP-S300 I then purchased I-Robot and Casino Royale Blu Ray.
First things first. The built in Freeview on things like the BBC news was excellent a big improvement on my old Panasonic TV and BT vision. Playing normal DVD's on the S300 was also impressive, better then my original non upscaling DVD player with the new Bravia. Then cam I-Robot Blu Ray and I wasn't blown away, there didn't seem to be a vast improvement over say The Matrix on normal DVD. Casino Royale was a wee bit better and I suspect that if I wired up my old DVD with a normal Casino Royale I would see the difference. Hey I know someone with the normal version so I may do that. In the meantime my question is, what Blu Ray disc or discs are going to assure me that I have spent my money wisely ?

How close do you sit to your TV? - try sitting MUCH closer (4 to 5 feet), and see the difference then.

I'm very surprised the excellent picture quality of I, Robot would not wipe the floor with the very stylised look of The Matrix which is not in itself a reference title for PQ. If you using Matrix the compare the DVD to the Blu-ray version.
Die Hard 4 is a demo title but again remember that for many deliberate grain and noise plus lighting effects are part of what makes a movie look "good" as opposed to what many consider to be optimum HD which is clean an almost sterile look to a picture. |

Nigel. I don't think the wife would go for the furniture rearrangement that would be needed !
Jarrak. I have ordered Die Hard 4 Blu Ray from Lovefilm. I'm still planning to do the DVD Casino Royale V's the Blu Ray version in a blind test. |

Can't say I agree on that I'm afraid. The PQ of The Matrix on Blu Ray is not reference quality. Casino Royal however, is pin sharp with good deep colour throughout. I'd class it as reference quality.
I usually demo blu ray for my friends with Casino Royal. Oddly, my female friends always want to see the scene with Craig emerging from the water.

I thought Transformers *looked* incredible.
Not exactly the most thought provoking of films .... but it certainly looked the part in HD! |

Tried the DVD and the Blu Ray versions of Casino Royale on the Sony Blu Ray player.
Played the scene near the beginning where 007 goes to a hotel on a sunny island. Easily picked out the Blu Ray version. On closer inspection the DVD version looked a bit blurred which I hadn't noticed before. It's probably only blurred compared to the Blu Ray version ![]() I did watch Transformers again last night on DVD which is great on the new player and telly. Ooh Ooh what to order now apart from Die Hard 4. |

I just watched the 1080i casino royale on Sky HD last night and the picture is stunning on a 42" 1080p set. But even that isnt as good as the blu-ray version @ 1080p/24 from the PS3. Mainly because theres no horizontal black border but its all a million miles from upscaled DVD
