Argos 1 yr guarantee/Samsung 3 yr guarantee

I purchased a Samsung LCD in Feb 07, but I am now having sound problems. The Samsung documentation says there is a 3 yr manufacturers guarantee, but I never got Argos to stamp it on purchase. However, I'd have had to split the box open in the shop in order to do that on purchase, which I wasn't obviously prepared to do.

Haven't yet taken it back to the Argos yet, but I just wandered if any of you guys have prior experience of this, before I go and shout the odds at them.

No mention of the 3 yr guarantee on the Argos receipt, so question is, is it a 1 or a 3 yr guarantee?

Seems obvious. If you have the receipt, then you can prove date of purchase and you should approach Samsung directly.

The card doesn't have to be stamped, your receipt is all that's required. However, I'm presuming you didn't have to register to get the three year guarantee?.

From a retailers point of view, they are responsible for the first 12 months guarantee, after that the manufacturer is responsible - which is why our invoice would have "manufacturers 3 year guarantee" written on it. If we just wrote "3 year guarantee" on it, that would leave us responsible.

Nigel - any thoughts on The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)?

Means the retailer has responsibility up to 6 years...

For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

this should last a minimum of 6 years
Just to clarify that the sales of good act states you have upto 6 years to claim and report that the product did not meet the contract at time of purchase, whilst this would include lasting a reasonable amount of time.

This is just the max time a case can be allowed into court

But only in a limited way - it doesn't give a six year warranty - it's a popular misconception.

Yes, limited, but better than nothing.

I have a computer monitor that packed up after two years. The retailer said 'not our problem' until I gave them a letter with words from Consumer Direct. They then gave me 50% of the original price off a new one.

You can deal with Samsung direct through their Online Repair Service, they asked me to fax them my receipt and they would send an engineer to check my panel.

Register your set with them and file your problem and they get back to you pretty quickly, I hadn't sent my warranty thingy to them either, who does - and I spoke to some nice Eastern European woman when I called, very sexy, comrade.

Thanks, stvn758, and everyone else who replied. I have logged a call with Samsung, and await their reply.
