There was a thread about this last night. This was no doubt Simon's way of trying to get Austin to tell the British public that "I really am straight, honest". He wasn't really taking the bait though and I wasn't really convinced myself. It was just a tad embarrasing.

It did seem as though Cowell was trying a little too desperately to assert Austin's heterosexuality, and because of Austin's lack of red-blooded response it achieved the opposite effect. It's the kind of precarious PR stunt that should have been discussed with his act beforehand.

There's also been suggestion the reason Diana was shown emerging from a wardrobe at the start of the household's goodbye video was a hint at Austin needing to come out of the closet, although I think it more likely to be a send-up of rumours.

The interesting thing is what effect Cowell's kiss of death had on Austin's chances. Last week saw Scott crash out following a lot of negative press about his love rat ways, which supposedly included him leaving a girl as she gave birth to their stillborn child. I don't imagine that endeared him to the voters. Likewise if a proportion of the voters suddenly twigged Austin may be gay it might have made some of them vote for someone else.

There has never been an openly gay contestant who has done well in these competitions. Will Young played it coy until after he won. There was a closet gay guy who had been in Mr Gay UK who was in Pop Idol, can't remember his name, and he crashed out the week after the story broke despite him being one of the favourites. Stateside, Anwar bombed the week after his gay online profile was discovered, and Clay Aitken has only just found it possible to come out after all this time, now that he's established himself.

Maybe Simon and Ruth and Austin and the dancer can go on a double date. I can bet the dancer and Ruth will have plenty of time to themselves.

God that was so awkward, Austin will probably admit he's gay now.

I think we need to start assuming people are gay and being surprised when they are straight.
This preconceived idea that people won't vote for him because he's gay is stupid, no one should even care.

one word (MONEY) or another one (PROFIT) as they fear gay acts dont sell records and make enough money to justify the 1 million contract, yet its so funny that all the judges make money from the pink pound day after day and id bet at least 2 maybe even 3 of the judges are gay or connected with gay people in some way, but a gay winner wow it seems they just cant cope with the idea of it, tut

The girls were stand-out gorgeous...Simon would have made that comment to any male singer!! And Austin has a girlfriend so of couse he couldn't say much!!

It really isn't rocket science...why are people suddeny obsessed with guys being gay? The girls aren't given a hard time about being lesbians, are they?? It all seems very sexist that the guys are picked on.

Actually he had a career that got him a bit of publicity before X-factor in all the interviews and reports on him he was (and probably still is) gay. The fact that he's decided to cover this up in X-factor was bad, the fact that people still care is sad.

Maybe he had a gay relationship when he was young...I did!! But then I met the guy who was my soumate and got with him. It happens. It isn't as black and white as people make out!!

And anyway, Austin was desperate to succeed and could well have taken on a gay persona before.

It's not a big deal what Simon said...he would have said it to any guy surrounded by stunning girls.

You're completely missing the point. What Austin may or may not be, and how he is perceived, may be two completely different things.

This is a sudden death contest where viewers vote for the most 'popular' acts. If there is any hint of negative PR it can affect someone's chances. Part of the attraction a good looking young male singer will have with his core audience of teen girls is that he is somehow "available" to them. If he's thought of as gay a lot of them will find another pin-up instead.

Not everyone will be aware of Austin's girlfriend, or even of gay rumours, but last night Cowell delivered the suggestion Austin may be gay due to his awkward questioning which was met by a lack of laddish response to those hot ladies.

And far from being enraptured with them beforehand, Austin was shown in a VT having to be told by Brian Friedman to interact with them and make eye contact or the whole thing would look ridiculous (which it did).

It is utterly ridiculous to jump from Simon's simple question to assuming he is gay...why would any young girl even make that link??

Since when has people become so obsessed with who is gay or not, that they read it into the most inoccuous comments/questions?? Not that many people are in fact gay..the VAST majority of people are straight, so why the obsession so that everything is read to being about gayness??

I must be missing the point, you're right! Thank goodness.

That, presumably, was the entire reason why Cowell said what he did - he was trying to scotch any gay rumours which he felt may harm his act's chances, only it fell flat on its face because Austin, for whatever reason, did not take the bait, and it then implied the opposite. He neither confirmed interest in the women, or that he had a girlfriend.

Pandering to the 'young girls' market is why almost every gay male singer or boyband member has tried to remain in the closet for as long as possible. That way you sell more records to the core audience by keeping their sexual fantasy going.

I don't believe for one second the question had any hidden meaning or that Simon had an agenda. Simon has been round long enoughnot to try things like that on a live show...people are reading FAR too much into a nothing situation.

I don't think that Simon leaves anything to chance. As soon as I heard his comment about the dancers, I knew exactly what he was up to. He should've left well alone.

You don't KNOW what he was up to...you're not psychic are you?? You are guessing and jumping to conclusions.

You are reading something into an inoccuous little question Simon asked a guy about some beautiful dancers...*I* noticed the dancers and I'm female so why wouldn't Simon mention them??

Yes, I am psychic. I've got a little tent down at the fun fair but business is slack at this time of year.
