What extra functionality will the next iPhone have?
I was wondering what you guys think Apples next move would be to keep the iPhone popular amongst the mass of new great phones on the market. The phone scene has changed considerably since iPhone 3g came out, with the likes of Samsung Omnia, SE x1, HTC Touch HD, BB storm and the G1 launching. Some stiff competition, Apple can't rely on having just a great browser forever.

next iPhone will probably have some sort of revolutionary MMS, much improved camera, introduce Video recording? just things that already exist on other phones but apple will make a big deal out of them.

What about the ability to download directly from the net. ( and pigs might fly)
Anyone any idea when the next incarnation will arrive. How long was it between iPhone and iPhone 3g? |

if ever a thread has the potential to show that iphone 3g is anything but a smartphone, this'll be it.

I think over the next few years its going to be about the platform. OSX vs Android vs Windows Mobile. All of the vendors will converge to one of these (I include Nokia in this - Symbian and their development environment will be *way* behind in a few years). WM7 probably won't see the light of day before 2010. But I see huge potential for Android and predict that it will become the Windows of the mobile industry. Apple will typically target and occupy the most lucrative 5% of the market. It can do this by keeping the hardware relatively high end but ensuring the end to end experience is best of class. So the camera improvements, video etc are just standard but more important is how the AppStore keeps its lead over the rest. Its all about the software now and for people like myself with dozens of apps that we are drawn to, the "lock-in" from a software perspective is very powerful. Lets say in 12 months time the iPhone has a 5mpx camera and the latest LG phone has 10mpx for half the price, I still wouldn't move because i'd need a way to sync all of my media and replacements for the 80+ apps I have. We've moved on from the stage of 3.2mpx vs 2mpx cameras. So the important thing for Apple is to keep improving interface builder, Xcode etc and porting over the cooler stuff from the desktop OSX (already done Bonjour, Core Animation, WebKit views etc). I'm thinking stuff like Keychain, QuickTime X, Quick Look for random file types, Spotlight, Calendar Store and so on. All would be awesome additions for developers. Now the only way the likes of LG and SE can compete with this is by moving to Android or WM7 (and SE have already done so). The age of the standalone or custom mobile OS is dead. These things are computers now and the decision to move from Windows to a Mac or the other way round for most people is more about the software than the hardware. You wouldn't switch to the Mac if you were perfectly happy with Windows and had investments in applications that you have grown accustomed to. That's the way most people will view mobile phones soon in my opinion. |

Timely.
Microsoft is partnering with LG Electronics, in a deal that will see the firms develop and collaborate on mobile technology. The memorandum of understanding, which expands on a past deal between the companies, agrees to joint research, development and marketing for converged mobile applications and services. Through the agreement, LG aims to boost its position in the smartphone market. The deal will combine LG's products and marketing teams with Microsoft's service and applications and its Windows Mobile operating system (OS). "This agreement between LG and Microsoft will create critical momentum in the industry," says LG's vice-chairman and CEO, Yong Nam. "With this partnership, mobile computing will truly become an everyday reality, and LG and Microsoft will be at the forefront of it." The deal was signed in Seoul, South Korea, by Yong Nam and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, as part of Ballmer's trip to the country. On the same day, Korean electronics rival, Samsung, unveiled a version of its Omnia touch-screen phone, which also uses the Windows Mobile OS, reports Reuters. In June 2007, Microsoft and LG Electronics signed a patent cross-licensing deal. The agreement ended four years of negotiations between the companies and gave firm access to the other's patents for their own product lines. |

So much for all the manufacturers embracing Android. Has anyone got another Android device in the works or is it all HTC at the moment?
I think WM7 will be a huge step forward, i don't blame LG for going that way. I think OSX may have some competition for once. I was just wondering where else Apple can go with OSX excep to add MMS. The hardware would benefit from a decent camera at the very least. |

As for where OSX can go besides MMS? That's like saying where could Windows go beyond the calculator. |

Bit of a weird one LG penning a deal with MS. With them being part of the Open Handset Alliance you'd think they'd be solely standing behind Android.
I'd still expect handsets from all the OHA members like LG Moto and Samsung. |

I'd like a flash. Xenon or LED - I'm not that fussed.
The ability to send things via Bluetooth'd be nice too (although they could sort this now, I think) |

I'd like to see.....
A much improved camera - 2MP is pathetic The ability to copy and paste and forward text messages MMS Longer battery life Larger storage capacity The capability to add more via an SD card or similar It's a beautiful device, loving every minute of use. |

I presume you've never used the desktop version of OSX.
Macs are far more restrictive than PC's. You can't even cut and paste on a Mac never mind an iPhone. Macs are almost entirely reliant on the software that Apple produces, with very little 3rd party software available when compared with PC. No IE for Macs, but Safari is available on PC. From a web develpment point of view this won't do. Although the Mac does have some advantages with video editting particularly with Final Cut Pro, quicker boot ups, less adware and virus's to contend with and it faultlessly updates itself in the background. Yes theres boot camp, but that means rebooting to change OS. And i know there is Parallels too, but that just isn't stable enough to run at a development level.

For me, the issue is battery life, although it's improved a little with the latest firmware update, I still can't rely on it to last me as long as I'd like. Copy and paste is next on my list - funny how you don't realise how much you miss something until it's not there, especially if you can't forward SMS. I'd like to see some way of watching live tv on the iPhone in the future
