Surely it would be better if some of these had been staggered into the New Year?

It's insane that the Sugababes and Keane (for two), aren't reaching anywhere near full potential, because there are 10, 15 new contenders out every week, with loads more still to come.

What is it about this year?

Because its christmas & people need presents to give to tone deaf/mantaly impaired relatives & Sony / BMG duly help this market with various X Factor contestants albums , Westlife CD's , Boyzone & Whitney Houston. It also helps the charity shops to stock up on cd's in January. The latest trick that the 'majors' pull to boost sales/profits is a special edition of a album youve already bought the previous year with some extra tracks , b sides etc & DVD. Duffy & Leona Lewis being some of this years culprits. The 'majors' know that kids will have christmas money burning a hole in their pockets by the 27th Dec & so they can make a killing. Why do you think X factor is done in the run up to christmas? Just tweleve weeks to plug the 'guest' acts who have product to promote & the contestants have 12 weeks to drum a fan base with which to tap in to.

Is just about the balance sheet , shifting units, then come February when its a slack time for record sales because everybodys skint after christams becasue they've bought crap for aforementioned relatives they have the BRITS , the BPI's annual lets drum up some sales at a slack time of year award ceremony. Its just a never ending cycle of trying to get you to part with money.

I do agree with the OP. This year more than ever there are so many albums coming out that I want.

I think chart positions will be effected by it. This is why I'm pleased Melanie B has waited until January to release her album as if it was out in a few weeks it would bomb without trace.

But The Saturdays. Great new fresh girl band have just missed out on the top 10. If it had been a few weeks earlier I think it would have benn top 5. So the pressure is being felt.

If The Saturdays management had any sense they would have waited for the new year. It's notorious that big bands and artists bring out their LP's at this time of year, to capitalise on quick massive sales due to Christmas.

Artists like Mel B and The Saturdays do not stand a chance. I predict the major winners of this year will be The Killers and Take That.

Probably because it's coming up to Christmas and people buy them as presents. I got two albums as Christmas presents last year but this year I might just ask for ITUNES vouchers so I can download them!!!!

The Killers will face some MAJOR competition for top-spot as Guns N' Roses Chinese Democracy album is out the same day. Metallica and AC/DC both saw off stiff competition from more radio-friendly acts, and I see no reason why GNR can't do the same, especially considering the hype behind this album.

Top album at Christmas will be Take That, out 1st Dec. Huge sales of that in the days left until Christmas. I'd say it'll have the biggest first week sales of the year, maybe 400k. Everyone's writing Dido off as her single limped to No.54 but I still think she'll have big sales.
