via bluetooth? I had a message pop up when i was on the bus. I'm worried that they could have got my contact list etc. How is this even possible? Do all phones enable you to do this?

The message you received is probably just a "contact" item that was sent to you but instead of sending contact information it was communicating a message, so in the Name field they just entered a message "haha I virus you", since its harmless most phones will receive it like a message just a nuisance. (I used to do it as a kid) you can get software to mass send them to every phone with blue tooth on in the area.

That aside it is best to leave you blue tooth off unless needed, there are actual security risks. BUT ultimately in current cases you are only at risk if you actively "accept" something blindly that you don't know anything about.

If you have a Nokia (s60) it will give you security alerts when your installing something, if you randomly get a security alert for you to accept after you receive an MMS (that you werent expecting) or randomly you may be wary! but Nokia have a security check in place so no random applications should be able to install. So this article is not actually true when it states symbian s60 is affected, and you are pretty safe but a good read.

The virus they mention in the article infects old Symbian handsets (before security was upped to have symbian signed apps).

it would be helpful to know what the phone is and what the message said.

If you must leave your bluetooth on (if you're a handsfree user or regularly tether it to your laptop/PDA) then leave your bluetooth in hidden mode. It won't respond to scans but devices that already know about your phone like your handsfree or PDA will still be able to connect as they will already know it's bluetooth "hardware" address.

You still needed to click YES to install it though. And there weren't many people daft enough to do so.
