True - but they are back!!!!

I saw them at both Sonisphere and at the Brixton Academy last week and they were superb!

As for PJ touring, their last proper tour of the UK was in 2000, I don't consider an occasional gig in London to be a tour...

I assume most of the people who write on these threads were never actually "there", as it were. There was never a "war" between rock and grunge. If you went to see Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or any other the other grunge bands 15 years ago you would have seen plenty of people wearing Iron Maiden or G'N'R t-shirts, and vice versa.

It's the same with saying grunge "killed" rock music - they are all rock bands for goodness sake!!

They did a kind of mini tour this year playing the o2, Manchester and Shepherd's Bush (where they were bloody awesome ). They are also back next year to Headline the Hard Rock Calling Festival. Also to be fair they have toured elsewhere since 2000.

As for the war I was in Australia back then where grunge was probably far bigger than here and don't know of any war most people I knew were a fan of both lots of groups.

They're one of the best rock bands of the decade. In what way are they awful? Because they don't sing and dance at the same time wearing Mickey Mouse trainers?

Why, which alternative rock bands in the 90s did?

Nickelback are awful because they're so middle of the road they may as well have white lines painted on their faces. Turgid drudgery that makes Puddle Of Mudd look cutting-edge.

I'd disagree with that. I'd guess only Nirvana has sold more, soundgarden and alice in chains certainly haven't. Maybe even Nirvana haven't sold more. Pearl Jam are huge in the US.

And Kurt was right about them- they have a very mainstream rock sound, none of the grit nirvana had.
Some of their songs are just pop really!

And grunge seems to be a label that was just thrown at all the rock bands that were popular in the 90's, none of whom really had much in common with each other.

I mean, Alice in chains were more like 80's metal and always hated the grunge label and pearl jam and nirvana sound nothing alike.

I saw Pearl Jam in Hollywood in October and can happily report that they've still got it.

I was never massively keen on Pearl Jam, although the Temple Of The Dog album with Chris Cornell is fantastic.

Some of their songs are also kind of punkish.

Whilst I agree they were probably more mainstream rock in the early days where as Nirvana more of a punkish rock you could hardly call Pearl Jam corporate.

Since their first album they have rarely even made videos for their songs, and lets not forget it was them that took on Ticketmaster even though they failed.

Their common thread was Seattle.

PJ have done one-off gigs in the Uk since, but their last full arena tour was in 2000. I mean, how long did it take to sell out either the O2 in Manchester or Shepher's Bush? 20 seconds I'd have thought, and 99% of those tickets would have gone to fan club members.

It was the same here, the "war" is an invention. Rock fans like good music, usually, so there was never any "war", only in the minds of the media desperate for a story - as usual!!!

Not a bad point really. I keep switching onto Kerrang Radio to see if there are any decent rock songs out but they all seem to be copies of bands like The White Stripes which I'd class as indie rather than rock. Where are the good new rock bands?

Indeed. Smashing Pumpkins were getting lumped under that label despite their sound at the time being different to all of their contemporaries. Nor did they mope around on stage looking all depressed, they used to laugh and joke quite a bit with the crowd.

Basically it was just lazy music journos pinning labels on all the bands of that time and drumming up false rivalries such as Corgan and Cobain.
