I saw Sheridan Smith after a matinee of Legally Blonde. Even though she had another show to do in the evening she went the whole crowd of people for pics and autographs. She was a delightful, lovely woman.

I also saw her twice in the show and she was fabulous.
At the BAFTA ceremony on Sunday, Graham Norton mentioned that the public were in and being kept away from the celebs, and made some derogatory remarks about them. Camera cut to Sheridan and she had an appalled face and looked uncomfortable about the jokes. I think she is a nice, down to earth woman who is that rare combination of being very talented but modest with it.

...Ted Moult, I found myself as a teenager sitting opposite him on an Inter City train to Euston one summer holiday...He shot himself not long afterwards!
I'm sure the two events are quite unrelated!

There's a rumour that Ted Moult actually died in a house fire; couldn't break his way out through the double glazing...

When this article about Sheridan Smith appeared, I thought of this thread and the complimentary comments about her.

'Returning home later that night he upbeat mood extended to her designated driver - who received a warm hug and an autograph as she departed'

Sheridan Smith seems to be an exceptionally nice person. How ironic that she was chosen to play Cilla Black!

Has anyone met Robert Englund? He comes across well in interviews.

She seems to be the nicest person in showbiz who isn't called Tom Hanks.

My sister met Laurence Llewellyn Bowen at a home and gardens show today and he agreed to being photographed and signing an autograph for her daughter. She said he was happy to do this for several people and was prepared to talk for ages.
OTOH I do recall seeing Geoff Capes at a local sports day in 1993 and he was a fat, sweaty misery who refused to talk to anyone and was probably only there for his fee.

He gets a few mentions here, all positive (even though the piece is about celebs being dicks!) http://jezebel.com/the-best-time-a-c...you-1704797468

I know we shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but I was walking past Radio 1 in 1987 and Mike Smith brushed off two schoolkids and me when we asked for his autograph. I found him quite rude. OTOH Bruno Brooks was prepared to talk and was quite friendly and interested in what we did.
Of the nice celebs I've met, Shaking Stevens( a real gent), Abi Titmuss( bought the entire hotel a drink and handed over autographed photos), Neil Kinnock( very amusing and pleasant), Jimmy Young( dapper old man and very polite), Kenny Everett( a bit shy but delighted when I told him I'd been a fan since I was 9) and Keith Chegwin( a brilliant laugh). Of the not so nice, Geoff Capes( see above), George Galloway( an arrogant slimeball who treated his flunky like dirt), Sir Geoffrey Howe( stuck up) and some drummer out of The Buzzcocks( didn't help that I told him I preferred prog rock).

Other celebs friends and family have met:
Phil Oakey of the Human League, patiently waited his turn in a bank queue and chatted to my friend about synth pop.
Colin Montgomerie, told my brother in law to p!"£ off when he met him at St Andrews.
David Beckham, pleasant enough but a bit dim.
Jack Charlton, my ex was his medical secretary and found him completely down to earth and popular with the patients and staff.
Sir Bobby Robson, ditto Jack Charlton.
Harriet Harman, an arrogant champagne socialist who looked down her nose at people.
Terry Wogan, likeable enough but looked a lot fatter than on television.
Maureen Lipman, a total misery.
Lynsey de Paul( RIP), lovely, interesting lady and very posh but not a snob.
Frankie Dettori, talks at 100 mph but a good laugh and obliges his fans.
Karen Briggs( ex judo star), opened a gym at her school and sessioned with one of my friends, who was a brown belt. No pretentions>
James Bolam, ditto Maureen Lipman, also very rude to shop staff.

Seeing Geoff Capes name reminded me he was at a sports day at my school as well, many moons ago now, but grumpy git pretty much summed him up.

He was sullen and couldn't wait to leave and really he did next to nothing( tossed a few shot putts and that was it) to justify his fee.
Of other sportsmen and women, my mate Steve used to be a judo nut and knew a few of the top stars like Brian Jacks and Neil Adams. He actually nearly strangled Jacks on the mat and said he took it really well and made a joke about Steve being his next opponent in the olympics and also gave a signed photo to the club. It does seem in the lesser known sports, where there's no money around, that the sports men and women are far more modest.

It really is the names which crop up and again, from direct encounters- not so much 'friend of a friend'- who probably have the most consistent character traits (i.e. Sheridan Smith = 'nice', Cilla, Geoff Capes, Maureen Lipman = 'not so nice'). I know I've said as much before but the names which emerge most often are the interesting ones. I can forgive anyone a bad day but when you are reported to be nice/ unpleasant on several occasions, the message will eventually filter through.

Even without the recent revelations, Jimmy Savile was considered by BBC staff to be a creepy egomaniac and not good to work with, considering himself the biggest thing in the universe. Also I do recall one of my friends seeing another fallen star, Rolf Harris, in the early 90s and said he was very abrupt with someone who asked for an autograph.

Actors who frequently do villainous roles tend to be the nicest.

Christopher Lee comes to mind, a total gentleman and interestingly for someone over 90, a heavy metal fan.

My friend Paul did a bit of stewarding at Maine Road for an Oasis concert and for all he didn't see her in person was told Patsy Kensit was the most obnoxious, ignorant diva the staff had ever dealt with.

I've met many actors in my time through work and organisations and I can't think of any that have not been nice to me, so it could be a long list.
So a better example would be to narrow it down where it really meant something.

An ex-girlfriend of mine used to date Michael Sheen for about a year whilst she was a drama student in Gorseinon situated in the of south of Wales back in the 1990 but life for them started pulling in different directions and so the relationship ended but they still remained friends. Then I came on the scene (although I had already known her for a few years up in the north of Wales) and we stayed together for six years. I was never the jealous type and accepted that people have histories and so had no problems with the occasional hand written letter (yes, the old fashioned way, folks!) from Michael to her and how he was progressing with his fresh career in theatre as well any television parts he was lucky enough to get. He'd often ask after me in their correspondence and bore no jealousy to me either.
We'd both sometimes receive theatre tickets if a theatre venue was near to us and so when one arrived for a Romeo & Juliet production in Manchester we gladly accepted.
The play was great and everyone in it did a fantastic job.
We had all arranged to meet up after the play and although I had yet to meet him, there was still that niggling doubt at the back of my mind that he might have some negativity towards me.
On the contrary, he was very charming took us both out to a restaurant for a lovely three-course meal in Manchester city centre and got on like a house on fire with plenty of belly-laughs all round!

I've a friend in the book trade and is involved in organising literary events. He told me that the writers who write the most violent, dark and gruesome crime novels and horror stories tend to be really nice , good humoured people. And the ones who write "nice" stuff tend to be the opposite.

Has anyone ever met the late Peter Cushing? I used to think he was marvellous in all those old Hammer Horror films.
