I met Gary Linneker years ago at a publicity event for Clic (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood). He's one of the nicest people I ever met. He spoke to everyone and signed autographs. He signed my sons football shirt and a tellytubbies annual for us! I believe he does a lot of charitable work for cancer charitities. It's a cause close to his heart as his son had leukaemia as a child.

I like this thread.I warm to the nice celebrities and groan to the nasty ones! The ones that are nasty tend to be from poorer backgrounds and maybe this is a contributing factor to their nastiness. But I'm glad that there is nice celebrities who tend to be the most talented ones out there. Please keep your posts up!

^ I'm not convinced this is so. I'm not interested in celebrities, but I'm interested in the interactions.

Firstly, from this thread, it appears that the vast majority of celebs** know where their support comes from, and at least make an effort to be nice. Even most of the bad stories are balanced by others who say the same person was nice as pie on another occasion. It's difficult to say how many of these bad encounters were because the person was tired, stressed, rushed, or even just shy, which seems to affect a surprising number of performers offstage. A celebrity needs to be pretty obnoxious* for nobody to have a good word to say about them.

It would be necessary to have much more controlled experiments to scientifically come to conclusions about rudeness and obnoxiousness tendencies in famous people. Posher celebs are less likely to be met wandering round Tescos (I'd say a bad time to approach someone), some people had it harder than others in the scramble to make it, and that affects people in different ways. Some people just have much better manners than others, and it would be hard to pin down a tendency. As has already been mentioned, people change over time, too.

Finally, any fan who expects a performer to be similar to their stage or screen persona is just asking to be disappointed, yet people do! Some fans go as far as assuming TV villains to be horrible in real life! I'd love to see a thread of celebs telling stories of the most outrageous fans they have met... I can imagine there would be some shockers!

*Or simply have the surname Leslie, Windsor or the dreaded Black.

**By a good ratio of maybe 8-1

I think you're right. The same person might be a complete darling one day and seemingly arrogant on another. It depends on context- they're not immune to changes in mood like the rest of us. I think it's when one hears persistent stories about the same individual (*cough* Cilla Black *cough*) being obnoxious on many different occasions that they might just not be a very nice individual.

That's just made me think of The Young Ones' school sketch: 'Get Tucker, Ducker, Sucker and Chucker....!'

The nicest 'celebrity' I've ever served was a young footballer. Strange to associate footballers with manners, I know.

He walked towards me, and as somebody who's son is a fan of the team he plays for I knew who he was as soon as he spoke to me.

At a hundred miles an hour and clearly flustered he said "I was wondering please if you could help me Miss. Do you sell - I'm sorry, I cannot pronounce it in English. Tagleeeteeelea. I'm sorry. That doesn't sound right. I can write it for you.....oh but my spelling not so good either. Is OK. Thank you anyway."

I quickly reassured him I knew what he wanted and I'd show him where it was.

The whole walk around to the pasta aisle he apologised for not being able to find it himself, for 'troubling' me and even for his pronunciation.

When we got there it was like I'd taken him to a case of buried treasure. his face lit up and he said 'Oh this is it. Yes! Thank you so very much Miss.'

Then he pulled out a 5 pound note and said 'for you'

I laughed and asked him what it was for and he said 'A tip. Because you help me so much.' When i explained that we can't accept tips and it's not generally customary to even be offered them, he blushed and said he was confused with tipping because it's very different where he's from - but to know that he was very grateful.

I finally told him I knew who he was and that my son was a fan. He was very pleased, and we talked for a few moments about his team and then we said our goodbyes.

I told my son when I got home and his face lit up, although he was annoyed at me for not getting an autograph! I didn't even think to ask!

The next day though, I was called by name to the customer service desk - and who stood there but my mystery footballer. He must have read the name on my badge. It turned out that he'd brought my son a signed shirt and even brought an unsigned photo with him so that he could dedicate it personally to my son once he'd asked me for his name.

Truly nice person.

His name? Most of you probably won't have heard of him. Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez.”

Loved reading that, thanks for posting. He seems to be just like he comes across in interviews and such. As you say, good to hear a positive story of a footballer.

All the stuff on the news about the sad passing of Jane Russell reminded me that I have a semi-story about a Hollywood legend of the same era. It's not a very good tale but, as someone a bit obsessed with the films of the 1940's, I was pretty much paralysed with starstruckedness in the lobby of the Almeida theatre when I clutched my friend's arm and said 'Is that...is that.. no, it can't be Lauren Bacall!'.

It was indeed the sultry lady herself, she was standing at the box office window being incredibly patient about the fact that they couldn't find her tickets, and she looked amazing. I wish I'd had the guts to say hello but I didn't want to be a pest when she was obviously on a private trip to see the a friend's performance. All I can report is that, as well as joking with the staff about her missing tickets - not a trace of 'don't you know who I am!' - she also quietly took her place in a long queue for the ladies' loos.

So my claim to fame is that I've sat on the same toilet seat as the legend that is Lauren Bacall

Met Lady GaGa and she was lovely, she also went out of her way to talk to me which I appreciated very much . Also completely normal, we had quite a boring, everyday conversation. Still really surprised by how nice and normal she was.

Met Matt Cardle last week. He was absolutely lovely, very friendly and was very grateful for his fans support. Security were trying to get rid of me and I asked him for a picture and he was very happy to pose for one with me

I met Kate Kate Gerbeau (Sanderson) (ex Newsround presenter and on Five news now I think?) who was very nice. I also have met Todd Carty, Shaun Williamson and Barbara Windsor from EastEnders and I have good things to say about all of them. They were all extremely nice and Babs was very polite too.

Two veterans of the celebrity signing circuit such as Dave Prose (Darth Vader) and Kenny Baker (R2D2) are both legends because of what they do for their fans and how nice they are.

Bad mentions: The guy who played Zander in Buffy (Nicholos Brandon), he is completely up himself and very arrogant and short with people.”

Nick Brandon had a drink problem for a bit - maybe he was hung over.
