I saw an interview with a writer and journalist a couple of years ago who spent a week backstage at DOND, and he said the show was a religious cult with Edmonds as their leader

The name of the person wasn't obviously someone famous - but curiosity got the better of me and I went to look at his pictures to see if I recognised him from the pub.

Well I did recognise him - but not from the pub - it was Anthony Field (he's one of The Wiggles - massive kids entertainers from Oz).

My 2 year old is a massive Wiggles fan and he mentioned they were touring the UK soon and would my son like to meet them - would he !!

Then at the beginning of June I got a telephone call from their tour manager the day before we were going to see them in Manchester saying that Anthony asked him to ring me to arrange a meet n greet with all the Wiggles and Captain Feathersword before the show - fantastic!

Imagine meeting your biggest heros and getting a photo with them - now imagine what this is like for a 2 year old - to actually meet these people he has seen on telly - he was amazed - and I am now Super DAD !

The great thing is he still posts on my wall and sends messages etc - one of the top 10 richest people in Australia with no airs and graces and seems genuinely a top bloke.

Anthony Field take a bow - you made my son very very happy - and anybody that does that is ok in my book !

Dave”

Aww that's a lovely story! Something quite similar happened with a class of small kiddies in the school I teach in and the dreaded (but actually very nice) Jedward.

Tell you who is nice - Jeremy Paxman. No airs nor graces. Handsome (in the flesh), nice AND intelligent. Three attributes Chris Moyles will never have.

A truly nice DJ was John Peel (met him once when he was doing a gig at Leeds Polytechnic in the early 80's. He held the door open for me and said hello (I had a hangover and looked like a bag of spanners at the time too - else I would have started a conversation). Peel was a really nice bloke - although I must admit I wasn't over keen on all his music choices!

Ian Paice (Deep Purple/Paice Ashton Lord) was nice too! Was on a pub quiz machine with him in Henley! He lost us a tenner mind (and back in the 90's a tenner was a fortune for a quiz machine) - but he was still nice.”

You are so right. I met him in the 70's at the old Radio One fun days at Mallory Park.
It was the time of the Bay City Rollers.
Down to earth guy, spoke to me as if he had known me for years.. sorely missed

The glamorous lady looked at me, smiled and opened her fur coat, cuddled me to her and wrapped me up all warm. I cuddled up to the wondrous Diana Dors for about ten minutes and probably got chip fat on her fur coat too. Fabulous woman!”

That's great

I remember reading that. The whole thing sounded so sinister and although I never liked the programme much anyway, that put me right off for good.

I have long thought that Noel Edmonds is going to go all David Icke-ish. Not surprised by what people have said here.

Shame. I don't watch Deal Or No Deal but I used to like his breakfaast show on Radio One and of course the Multicoloured Swap Shop. I thought that the tv shows he used to do on saturday evenings on BBC1 were a bit silly though. And never forget he's the culprit who gave us Mr Blobby!!

Some people reckon he's losing interest in all the "universe" stuff, but for a long time Deal Or No Deal was quite weird with him cast in the role of the cult leader surrounded by his disciples.

LIGHTS

I haven't met any other celebrities so I have no basis for comparison but I met LIGHTS on Tuesday after seeing her in concert. It was raining and around 1AM but she was really nice and so sweet, she spent quite a while talking with fans, taking pictures, signing things, she even filmed a video message for somebody who couldn't make it to the show.

Yes, it strikes me as being like that now. What with all these weird quasi-ceremonial routines like bowing to the box-openers (seriously, WTF, never got that), 'dream factory' piffle, and of course Noel Edmonds in full on creepy mode.

I said on another thread that DoND started off quite a fun, disposable watch, and it did, but I couldn't take to it after it started taking itself so seriously. And boy, it does, it really does. Like others have said, almost like a creepy religion!

Yeah, and the danger with it is that people might well wait a long time to go on the show, after applying, and then go home with a poxy penny. OK, we could argue that they know what they're letting themselves in for but the sense of anti-climax after such a huge build-up and all the crazy hype must be profound, even for those who win decent amounts.

LOL

It's a TV show...

What's creepy is people finding something sinister in a successful entertainment format.

Get a grip folks!!!

Whether I agree or disagree is irrelevant, but when people start taking TV shows so seriously, there is something not quite right.

Well, DONO takes itself seriously so people are just reacting in kind.

But I get the feeling you and I might have to agree to disagree and leave it there.

.. Kind of like how DoND takes itself so seriously, then

.. I don't think any of us actually think that the DoND people are going to be the next major cult (we're all aware it's a gameshow!), what I'm getting at is it gives off 'vibes' as if it were one, with Noel as the ringmaster.

The main reason it went in that direction is because Edmonds appears to be something of an oddball with all his mystical and 'new age' spiel and his talk of 'destiny' and 'fate' etc. It's like watching a game show presented by David Icke

Jim was a most unlikely game show presenter, as he admits himself. He was a stand up comic in northern working men's clubs and felt he wasn't at all cut out for TV presenting and thinks his early days on Bullseye were quite disastrous, but the show rapidly acquired a cult following, and the rest is history
