Opening the box there is a bank of three press in clips marked A E B on the top there are three screw in wire holders marked A B Earth. Can anyone tell me what is the colour coding the three press in wire holders A,E,B stand for inside the box it is marked BT80892A.

did the cover have "BT Redcare" on it? anyways it's white/blue to A, blue/white to B, nothing to E. unless it's overhead cable then it's orange to A, white to B. would help if you could say what colours the cable is.
though if it doesn't have BT Redcare on it, or it's not situated by an alarm panel, then chances are its before the NTE5(as we use BT78's after NTE5's) and technically if you don't work for us(which if you did you wouldn't be asking) then you are breaching the T & C's with your service provider.
though saying that, many people tinker with our wiring and providing you don't mess it up you will be fine.

oh, and ensure you use the correct tool for inserting the wiring into the IDC's. DON'T use a small screwdriver as they will go faulty.

Its white in colour, I was thinking of using it internal for
an extension, I must have had it years.

Perhaps a bad idea, however I already have one in use that an engineer put in years ago, as an extension to another main box, this was during a house rebuild.

Why would it have these three press ins as well as three
screw ins.

This box was first brought into use many years ago. the idea of the screw terminals is to terminate the different gauges of wire that would bring the service in from the pole.

The IDC connecters are for the 0.5 wire used for the internal distribution aaround the premises. Only one of these boxes should exist per line. It's use is to change from external to internal wire, initailly located by a window or door due to the ease of bringing service in through a woodden frame.
