My Mum wants a Samsung Plasma TV, it's not full HD and she only watches Sky, mostly documentaries and Murder She Wrote type stuff. Do I need to worry about screen burn, it does seem to be a thing of the past - I even read it was a myth put about by LCD makers because they were jealous of Plasma.

I also got myself a Panasonic Full HD Plasma, I was going to get a replacement Samsung LCD after they wrote off the last one with the dark line on the screen but read so many glowing reviews on Plasmas I twitched and changed.

Going to be using it for PC gaming, will take precautions of course, but should I be worried.

Funny how the warranties all specifically state that screen burn isn't covered

Don't leave it sat on an unmoving display, and keep the contrast level down, for the first few months - screen burn is at it's most likely during the burn-in period.

EEK!

Don't think my Mum would understand about such things, she's worried she's going to have to get rid of her Sky+ box when we 'go digital'.

So am I going to blown away by Plasma then, Nigel?

I'm very happy with mine on SD, tried HD on it, I didn't consider it was enough of an improvement to be worthwhile.

Well I have my Mum's 50in Samsung Plasma sitting in the kitchen, it's huge and I haven't even opened the box yet.

I remember drooling over those 32in CRT sets a few years ago with their space age almost flat screens, now you can get something like this for eight hundred quid. She's using my Phillips 28in set at the moment, twenty years and still working perfectly.

Be interesting to compare it to my LCD.

I fitted six in some apartments earlier on this year, in the living rooms as the apartments were completed (along with 40 inch LCD's in the main bedroom, and 32 inch LCD's in the second bedroom). The next four apartments had two sets only, both LCD's 40 and 32 (but they were smaller and cheaper apartments).

Pretty heavy sets the Samsung plasma's

Well turns out the box didn't weigh much after all , almost dropped the bastard getting it into the living room.

Can't say I am too impressed with Plasma, much prefer the glow of my LCD. Hard to compare as it's only a cheap 4 Series but I can see the CRT traits.

If I fed it some hi def it would probably shine, was expecting a little more from Sky though as it's only HD ready.

No! I'd wonder how they could afford one on a pension. Must be a retired gangster or Mafiosa type!

No she's not a gangster, and she doesn't have to pay for nine months so she's happy.
