Pet owners face code of practice

OK, so some are already complaining on the Beeb's website about it being another case of 'nanny state' interference, but if issuing clear cut guidelines on looking after pets is what it takes to prevent more animal cruelty cases, then this can only be a good thing!

Quote:
“Owners will not be fined for breaking the rules but failure to comply may be used in animal cruelty prosecutions.”

Besides, too many people often purchase animals on a whim because they think they're cute and they haven't the faintest idea about looking after them! (None of you FMs, of course. )

Any thoughts?

Yea - how ridiculous!

Why would people bother to read it and how would they even know it was there to read? Don't responsible pet owners who have never owned a pet get a book on the subject? Will irresponsible ones care?

Im with you on that....I doubt guidelines from the government will make a lot of difference to people who dont care for their pets.

Although on the other hand I guess it could be helpful for someone who has never had a pet before...

A complete waste of time.

Good pet owners don't need a code of practice. Bad pet owners will just ignore it anyway.

Who is going to police this new code?.

This government can't even police child abuse so animal abuse must be well down the list of priorities

So now i'll just report bad owners to DEFRA and await with baited breath their response.

How will DEFRA monitor the pet owners as there is no current register
