Pros' Choice of Music

As a former dance teacher, I've found some of the music choices quite bizarre this season and I have been so disappointed at how unsuited they were both for the dance and the celebrities.

They haven't been helped by the 'interpretation' some of the 'singers'
Do the pros seriously think about how their music choice is going to sound when its a live band on the night, often with caterwauling, as opposed to a CD

The choice of song will make or break the dance and with non-dancers even more so.

I thought Camilla's choice for the Paso was absolutely terrible. I might have forgiven Tom's ridiculous expression had the music been more appropriate.

It's not entirely down to the pros. The BBC don't want too much traditional music in case viewers can't relate to it or perceive the programme as dated. So the pros have to find some kind of modern music that might not be horrific... which after six series, is understandably quite difficult!

I agree, although a live band adds to atmosphere in the studio, they are not good, and the singers are appalling. I would far rather see the dancers dance to cds.

As to the choice of music, it has been bizarre in all the series.

Erin said the pros have 'some' say in the music choice, but implied it was only very limited choice.

My understanding is that the beeb, in its infinite (lack of!!!) wisdom, doesn't want strict tempo dance music used as they don't think the non-dancing viewers will be able to relate to it, or like it. Personally, I think that is a insulting and underestimates the viewers intelligence.

I always thought it was a choice and something which was dicussed between the pro and celeb - I'm sure I remember one of them saying that they (celeb and pro) discuss what they would want to dance to etc.

I agree. With a few exceptions (ie trad Tango music) I've been disappointed with the music choices and general performance quality levels of the band and singers. There seems to be a distinct lack of power and resonant depth to the music.

I was very surprised that no James Bond theme music chosen by anyone, especially this weekend with the opening of Quantum of Solace; also just once, I would like to see Johann Strauss II/Franz Lehar used for a proper, pure Viennese Waltz: Emperor Waltz/Blue Danube/Gold and Silver Waltz.

I think I remember reading off another poster that the pro's are given 4 choices for each dance before the series actually starts , so Beeb can get clearance (in fact I may have heard it off Claud herslf! whilst talking to *mutters* jonathon ross.)

They'll be saving that up for the AT, as it's had a strong showing in the past two years

I don't think the choices this series have been much better or worse than any other (though Hayley picking Kelly Clarkson for the paso stands out as an all-time low ), but I agree it's a bit patronising for the BBC to insist on modern music just so all the 10-year-olds can sing along...

I remember Louisa and Vincent changing their music choice for the Samba because Louisa wanted something faster, so I reckon that they can pretty much use any song they want as long as the beeb get permission from copywright people!

As for this series, so far Brendan has been spot on with his music choices. I loved the traditional music they used for the Tango. And although I also prefer trad music for the Paso, I thought that "Eye of the Tiger" worked very well as a replacement! Unlike Camilla's dreadful decision to use Cutting Crew !

I'd say the choice of music is certainly one reason why I am not being as thrilled as I usually am by the dancing this year.

I have to agree - there's a world of music out there whether traditional or more upbeat modern stuff.

Don't like to say it, but the music choices on Dancing on Ice have been VERY good

I am so sorry I kept thinking of Desperate Dan and Cow Pies.. which distracted me from the music at least.

But yes the music has been a let down this year I agree.
