Argos has a good quality surround sound for £99.. i bought it as it was the cheapest i could find that had optical. coaxial an 2 av inputs so every thing can connect to it...The surround sound is amazing, with good bass, but i linked my old trusty jvc satalite speakers instead of connecting the new ones( no time to remove all the wires and rewire around skirting boards) so havent tried it with the speakers that came with it.

but overall very sattisfied, good 5.1, dts sound and my blurays sound fantastic. Will do until i can splash out on a state of the art system.

there is also a cheaper 1 at £79.00. but shop around on the net and you will find them cheaper

Some idea of budget would be useful info. Also, what has your mate got that so impressed you?

You would need to up the budget significantly to get HD Audio. I would be tempted to bin these within a few weeks, frankly.

Fine for a family room, where the kids are likely to try poking things, though - cheap to replace.

I would suggest a budget of between £350 (no HD Audio) and £800 (full HD audio) for reasonable quality kit.

Heyia,
what about the Philips HTR3464 home cinema system for £138? It's a decent system and good-valued.

£300 will get you HD audio but the system can be bettered with much better speakers.

System in mind is Sony STRDG820 £250 Plus Yamaha NSP110 speaker package £50.

Upgraded speaker package which IMO would be the starting point budget wise for HD audio is the Onkyo SKSHT518 - £170.

System price £420.

If HD audio is of no interest you can get basic DD/DTS for under £200

The Yamaha AV63.
