PS3/V+ box connections to Panasonic PX70

Hi

Thanks for any help that can be given for the questions below.

1) Recently bought a 37" Panasonic PX70 - very pleased indeed with the superb pictures through freeview but less so with V+ box, although still very respectable.

- is it worth connecting the V+ box to the Tv though an HDMI cable when only BBC HD is available on V+ at present and will SD suffer if I do?

2) I have a PANASONIC SC-BT100EB-K Blu Ray system attached via HDMI1 and the quality of imges and sound from Blue Ray discs is absolutely magnificent.

But, I have just come into possession of a new 40Gb PS3 for free (mobile phone deal) and connected via HDMI2 - when I tried to set the display to 1080 - the TV screen flashed a lot but is okay on 720p. The HDMI cable is Technika 2m cable from Tesco, so not the best I admit. Am I doing something wrong with the PS3 set-up?

Thanks for any help.

HDMI is best in all cases.

The V+ box should upscale the SD channels via HDMI which it wont via scart.

The Panny tv should accept 1080p input without a problem.

IIRC the PS3 can tell what the max input your tv will accept is.

If it wont take 1080p try 1080i.

Just in case the HDMI lead is faulty take the one from the other HD source and connect to the PS3 just to try the input again.

The V+ looks so much better through HDMI you'll almost think you're watching HD with some broadcasts, almost.

Thanks guys for the comments.

Strangely, I have just changed the connections as a test such that the Panny Blu-Ray player is now going through HDMI2 and the PS3 through HDMI1. The Panny Blu-Ray player works as well through HDMI2, but interestingly the HDMI1 is better with the PS3 in terms of less flashing and it now accepts the 1080p signal. Once the kids have finished playing, I will put the PS3 though the Monster HDMI cable I use with the Panny Blu-Ray to see whether the problem is the cheap HDMI cable.

As far as the V+ box is concerned I will take your advice and try the Monster HDMI cable I have and change the output to HDMI instead of Scart on the V+ box to see the effect.

Sorry guys, a really thick follow-up.

I put an HDMI cable from the V+ box into the TV, (was connecting with SCART before) and went to that setting on the TV but it wouldn't find the V+ box. So I used the SCART setting (AV) to access the V+ box and change the settings to HDMI on that, but after pressing OK, it just went to AV on a blank screen and wouldn't find the HDMI-connected V+ box before going back to a SCART setting.

On the previous questions I had, it seems the cheap cable is (at least part of) the problem. I played a Blu-Ray disk through the PS3 using the Monster cable and that was fine with no flashing, the display showing 1080i input. However, when I then put Call of Duty PS3 game though the same configuration that resorted to a 720p input as shown by the TV display. Don't really understand that - will change the cable though for a better spec.

Any comments/suggestions really welcome.

Although the PS3 outputs 1080p - check the back of the game box and you may find its only in 720p.

I'm no gamer but the few games my son has are all 720 with only non game material in 1080.

If you set the V+ box to HDMI is there not an additional setting to send the V+ signal out at the correct screen display of 720 or 1080?

Worth noting that the Panasonic Viera tv I have does not automatically recognise HDMI 2.

Anything input to HDMI1 will switch over just like a scart connected device - but anything on HDMI2 will require manual switching from the tv remote

You need to select the hdmi channel yourself after choosing the setting.

I expect it varies between brands - mine is a Panasonic tv.

I would have expected a set with just one HDMI input to have auto switching

On my Panny you set which ever input port you want to be the default start up - I have my Sky HD on HDMI1 and set this to the default input (when the Sky box is ON).

Otherwise, the Freeview tuner bcomes the default.

Thanks for your answers to date

Scorpio - I have a Panny 37PX70, so assume it will be the same set up as yours - I have a V+ box not Sky. I have tried to connect the V+ box which has a HDMI connection to HDMI1 on the TV, but cannot get the TV to reconise the connection - how did you change the default?

My Panny tv has built in Freeview but I'm sure my model does not have the setting you mention - where does it lie in the menu.

Currently - mine comes on to Freeview on whatever channel it was left on .
If anything via RGB or HDMI1 is already switched on it will display those .

For HDMI2 (PS3) I have to manually switch the tv.
Sky HD seems to lock my multi HDMI switcher so I cant use anything else on it with Sky HD as it requires manually switching the switch over - which defeats its purpose.

Hi - just to say I have fixed my V+ problem. I found the answer at

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/10...ough-hdmi.html

Just in case someone is having the same problem, essentially, I connected a SCART and HDMI cable at the same time from the V+ box to the TV. Go to home on the V+ remote and go to settings - change setting to HiDefHDMI and then push text button (bottom right of the remote) immediately to prevent a default reversion to SCART. It then finds an HDMI connection at 720p, which believe you me is far better than the SCART connection. At last the TV is done justice though the V+ box. (PS I removed the Gold SCART cable which was an expensive one and I am going to take it and the optical cable back to the shop where I got the TV and ask for a quailty HDMI one as a replacement - I told them I was using a V+ box and they should have told me that it would have worked through HDMI - I would have used a cheap SCART for the set up)

As far as the PS3 problem is concerned, the issue there was the cable. I am taking the Technika rubbish back to Tesco and getting a new high quality cable. Lesson learned - cables are important and you get what you pay for.

Thanks for all your help btw.

Like i said if you switch to the HDMI channel you'll see the confirmation box telling you to press text.
