How can I stop new kitten digging in litter tray, and pooping on caroet
Vedder

*should be carpet not caroet*

My GF picked up a stray the other week, she's a lovely 4 month old kitten, very energetic and playful.

She's already taken a chunk out of the snout of our other cat and torments and attacks him constantly.

She will find everything and anything to play with, and never sits still, we've taken her to the vets and had her 'tummy problem' sorted.

The only thing is that she has taken to pooping in the study on occasion (even when litter tray is fairly clean), and keeps digging in said litter tray even without actually needing to use it.

I have tried putting tin foil down in the study to scare her off, but that did not work.

Any ideas of a deterrent, and something to stop her digging?

She does it at 5am when she wakes up!

Sounds a bit like a possible territorial (marking) battle with your other cat. If you've ruled out all physical problems, not a lot you can do except try to reconcile the combatants? I've had sibling kittens share a tray, but they still used to check it out, and even RUSH to bury the other's "offering", often prominently (and deliberately?) displayed! But, as with some human beings, with unrelated cats, coexistance may not be easily establised. Maybe a choice of TWO litter trays in different parts of your home might help...

As a remote possibility, might still be a touch of Cystitis. I have had, especially female cats, "digging", without notable "issue", precisely because of bladder problems... or even anal gland(!) trouble.

Mine used to dig because it was a fun activity to make a mess and a noise.

I would have two trays if you have two cats or let them out to do lavatorial activities.

Apart from closing the doors, there isn't much you can do. Mine used to go behind the curtains, but now she goes outside.

If you have the time and get up at 5 am you could supervise her by picking her up and putting her in her tray and telling her to go "wees" much like you would toilet train a baby.

Is she sharing the litter tray with the other Cat? if yes, get her one for herself. She'll be digging to cover the scent.. (which is also natural for any cat to do after they've been the loo anyways)

Also might not be a fan of the litter you're using, especially if she's a stray and used to soil. Try the woodchip for a few weeks and slowly exchange them bit by bit.

Did this problem start before you got stuck in the chair the other day or after?

If it was before then the poor creature might have been traumatised by your plight.

Digging in the litter train is such fun, and it makes a noise and lots of mess.

Use a litter that when wet clumps together and only clean out the wet and poo, DONT WASH THE TRAY and dont change the litter tray fully every day, as this is the wrong thing to do IF THAT is what your doing, as the cat needs to scent where it is going. You only need to wash the tray every 1/ 2 weeks really as long as your taking out the poo and wee everyday of course.

This is a good web site about the subject:

You should have more than one litter tray if you have more than one cat as others have said.

Good luck.

My little one has just started the scrath the Hell out of her tray and she has been using it for 4 months now

It's enclosed, I clean pooh and clumpy bits out everyday and add a tad more litter.... I change thoroughly twice a week and use a eco friendly (nee cat friendly) deterrgent.

She has always been fine with this but in the past week or so has taken to going in and scratching the 'walls' of the tray. I can see her little claw marks when I clean it.

Any ideas why she has started doing this now?

OP - make sure when you get up and kitten has messed you show him/her where litter tray is and if ever kitten looks like its about to go in your vicinty then scoop it up and put it in litter tray. They are pretty smart and usually pick it up quite quickly!!

Also as others have suggested try different litters etc...

Then she has to have a colostomy. You can do it yourself at home with a swiss army knife and a sandwich bag.

No! Don't thank me!

We are using the 'normal' catsan, but will try the wood chip

She has looked a bit more startled since then!
