I don't really agree though that the negativity on DS this year, which is certainly stronger than any other year I remember, is mainly from bitter Gethin fans. I think it's more a combination of last year being so great - seeing Alesha last night really reminded me of that - and there not being many couples this year with that much real sparkle. Very likeable couples this year, definitely, but not much 'Wow' - in my opinion, obviously. (Austin is the only one for me.) The four weeks before 'now the competition starts in earnest' didn't help either. I really think that there keep being dances that aren't quite as good as the training footage makes you think they are going to be. I'm hoping that will change this week.”

Any training footage from Austin would be nice this week before I have a complete nervous breakdown! I'm starting to imagine all sorts of horrors in his rhumba!

And you're right, I'm wrong to lay the blame for the negativity at Gethin's fans' feet, that's unfair. But they do seem to have an awful lot of unresolved bitterness, but then I was a Matt fan so I have no idea how they felt.

I started with Cherie and James and Don and Lilia as favourites. This was mainly because I remembered things both Cherie and Don had been in whereas I didn't know much about the others' careers.

I now have Cherie and James as favourite with Jodie and Ian as a close second. However I also have an admiration for Austin's dancing and his attitude.

I really dislike all the negativity as well. I might venture an opinion on who I think should go next but I try to be polite about it. Generally I try to respect the fact that other people have their favourites and not make personal comments.

Cheers guys

I was thinking about it anyway, and in series 4, I quite liked Matt Dawson, so maybe it's time to learn the lesson and shatter my inbuilt myths of sports folk. Then again, for goodness knows what reason, I had a slight (SLIGHT) fancy for Matt D. I can never understand it, but can't deny it either! Anyway, TMI.

I must say as well, I really like Erin amongst the pros and I do feel like she does deserve a win. Maybe Austin will be the one...

What made me laugh reading this though was remembering that Andrew was a sportsman! I mean, I knew about his tennis "career" before SCD, but everytime Bruce makes a joke about it, it takes me a few minutes to remember why he's harking on about tennis.

But honestly, can I say, about series5 that it may have had better overall dancing (arguably), but it was completely and irretrievably ruined for me by the sourness, unpleasantness, overmarking, shouting, usually by Len, and I still can't bear to remember the semi final.

This year I'm enjoying far far more as the tone is better and the muppets have calmed down, on camera at least.”

"Cheers guys" is for you to Miss Nancy.

Definitely agree he's far more exciting than a lot of the celebs this year. And I think the partnership with Erin works very well.

Totally agree too on enjoying this series a bit more. Tens arent being thrown around like confetti at a wedding, and certainly I remember Len's behaviour in regards to Kelly in particular being quite distasteful. And bit more exciting in general just because it's hard (for a lot of people it seems) to choose an overall favourite. I feel like I won't really have one til the final!

My favs are John and Kristina although it would not be right for them to win.
If they can remain of sufficient high standard I would like either Jodie, Lisa or Rachel to win.

This time last year there had been just two 10s - one for Kelly's American Smooth and the other for John's salsa. People probably remember them as they were both rather ridiculous, although I'm tempted to say the 10 for Austin last week was in the same category. And Austin is my favourite, before anyone jumps on me

That's interesting as I've got the feeling sometimes that posters think there should have been 10s already this year. Expectations get so high! Good to know there's plenty of time yet!

(PS I didn't think last week's 10 was warranted either ).

Well, seven weeks into the comp last year, there were also the 10s for Alesha's waltz, so comes to four in total.

If you take the relative half-way stage through the competition, it would be just the two, but it's difficult to compare with the effect of the first four gender-split weeks this series.

I'm not keen on this obsession with 10s. I think the mark should be used sparingly for something that looks near enough perfect. there were far too many 10s last series.
