It's funny how you go with one thing in mind (small, short haired) and end up with something totally different. When we got Barney I said the one thing I didn't want was another collie, not that I don't love the breed, I was just worried about comparing him to our last dog... guess what we ended up with? I'm not complaining though, he's hard work but worth every minute. ...................



this is very true, happens so often, you go with a firm idea if what you think you want, and come away with the opposite! Personality has a lot to do with the picking of apet, even in pure bred dogs, although they have some common characteristics, they can still vary emormously in personality. I have 2 staffs who could not be farther apart when it comes down to personality!

personality wise, she's exactly what we were after. ok, she's a bit bigger than we originally were looking for, but she's perfect in every way lol! aw im going to be so disappointed if we dont get her

That's so true. Personality wise Barney couldn't be more different from our last Border collie Taz.. He's very very hyper and needs to be constantly kept occupied, whereas Taz was always so calm and quite lazy as far as collie's go.

What a load of prejudice you talk imo.
We have 3 pedigree dogs and one of them was from a shelter. We got her because the person who breed her could not show her because she had an ulcer on her eye. We were lucky to get her, as she is a rare kind of cocker.She is black white and tan and she had been in the shelter for approx 1 day. But we were lucky enough to meet the person who breed her and she was a lovely lady and very caring towards her dogs. She also has another job btw so shes not lazy. We also saw the dogs mother etc etc. This lady put our dog in the shelter as she didn't want to SELL someone a dog with a bad eye. She would rather that she went a nice home without someone paying stupid money for her. We paid a donation to the shelter and shes a great natured cocker spaniel.

We also have 2 labs from the same breeder and this guy cares alot about his dog. He also trains dogs aswell and is a RETIRED fireman - so again not a lazy person either as you put it.And cares for all his dogs.

soooooooo we called them today at about ten past twelve, and were told that the other couple hadnt contacted them and we could book her. ten minutes later my phone went ... the other couple had turned up to book her and we couldnt have her

anyhoo, we popped down anyway to have a look at the new admissions, and seen 3 gorgeous staffie x pups. 9 weeks old







Loki comes home on Tuesday

I think you are better off with a pup, as you have young children, to be honest. As mentioned before, some older dogs have a lot of problems. Nearly always through no fault of their own.

Awww congratulations Jessica. It's a shame you were beaten to Fudge, but it's win win really, since she has a new home and now little Loki does too. I bet Tuesday can't come quick enough for you now.

aw maaaaaaaaaaaaan, i've been out-voted, himself and my daughter want to call him axel (as in axl rose from guns n roses - the guinnea pig is called angus, as in AC/DC, and the old guinnea pig was called ozzy ... i see a theme here ...) but i still prefer loki. not sure if im keen on axel

tuesday is A MILLION YEARS AWAY right now lol! the fella from dogs trust is coming to asses the area Loki/Axel will be living in tomorrow morning. he wont be allowed upstairs - thank goodness for stair gates! - and tbh, i doubt i'd let him out into the garden, as that just encourages us to be lazy. of course, untill he's had his full compliment of jags he'll 'go' in the back garden, but after that, it'll be a leash and a walk!

Well, Axel is a good name too and quite catchy. I think the puppy would learn it quickly.

Wanted to ask Jessica, what dogs trust did you get your doggy from? As i used to stay in Livingstone and we got on of ours from a dogs trust

i would maybe say wait a few years, when your children are old enough to cope with a bouncy puppy around the house no matter what his size. We had a springer when i was about 5 and i was just terrified of him, he was good natured, he was just a bit too much to handle at that age. He's calmed down now after 11 years though and we now have a lab who is very good natured, would probably reccomend a lab to a first time owner. i suppose its in the name "springer"

Totally agree with that , my lab is 3 years old now and the most sweet natured dog you will ever meet, she is so loving and daft as a brush ! shes scared of spiders and beetles and stuff.

Also amazing with my kids, i got her when my daughter was 4 and she was so gentle with her, jumps around me crazy mind you !! Now my 1 year old son with her is a different story he loves the dog to bits get so excited when he spies her and all she does is hide from him he crawls around the house shouting " b b " for (bella) and the dog hides in the kitchen away from him

I suppose Jessica will be far too busy with Loki to ever be on this forum again!

LOL!!! he's slobbed out accross my feet with his head danglin off the couch at the mo, so i have a bit of spare time. he's a lovely wee dog, and has settled really quickly ... so far! only 2 wet accidents, one poop in the garden, and 2 pees in the garden. has already started getting used to his leash, and has stopped jumping up on the kids unless he is VERY EXCITED, in which case he is gently pushed away and ignored til he calms down a bit. has eaten and drank well today, and coped well with visitors earlier. is happy for me to look in his ears and mouth and check over his paws and eyes, travels well in the car. he's so calm - for a staffy pup - and has a great nature. really patient with the kids, especially when the baby tried to bash him on the head with his cup i say tries, as they are not left alone, and Loki has not left my side so i've managed to intercept! coped really well with being left alone twice today, although im sure he'll keep us up tonight crying
