hi my male kitten got nutered and had his 2nd jab approx 2 weeks ago, and for about a week now he has had diarrhea, it is thick and not watery at all, the last 6 days i have fed him on chicken breast and rice. He does not seem ill he is still his playful self, still running up the curtains etc. I just wondered if diarrhea is a normal thing after being nutered?

If he's had it for a week it'll slowly be dehydrating him.

Visit to the vet methinks.

(Oh ... and I've never heard of neutering causing this)

I've never heard of it after the op either. Best get him to the vet like above poster said. He's only little so he'll be getting dehydrated.

Hope it's nothing serious and he's on the mend soon

In the meantime try as best you can to stop him becoming dehydrated. Make sure he always has water to hand. The downside is that he could be losing minerals from his body and too much water will dilute what is left of them and this isdangerous if it goes on for too long, particularly in such a tiny body. Keep a close eye on him and if he becomes easily tired, stops seeming well in himself and doing usual kitten stuff, take him to the vet sooner rather than later.

Also look at his gums (if he will let you) just to check that he is not losing blood in his stools. His gums should be deep pink, not pale. Kittens can lose blood very quickly as they have so little in their body.

It could be a reaction to the jab, though this is unusual. Also sometimes the wound can become infected after neutering. Again this is rare but if that is the case the infection could be affecting his stomach. This seems unlikely if he appears to be otherwise well. An infection would be likely to make him run down. If it is the case though and he needs antibiotics the vet will more than likely give him an antibiotic injection.

I hope he makes a full recovery soon.

Are you giving him cows milk at all?

Most cats are lactose intolerant & this can cause diarrhoea.

Also one of my cats can't eat chicken. If she does, she makes awful smells Might be something like that, but of course depends if he's always had the same thing to eat with no probs before.

How's he doing?

My six month old had a bout of the same last week, and she was neutered 2 weeks beforehand.. I reckon it had more to do with their first burst of real freedom to roam the garden and beyond, and there was quite a bit of grass chewing going on.. not to mention drinking rain water collected in various implements in the garden - why drink the fresh water the humans put down in a special bowl - so I suspect it was something like that. She was in good form and recovered quickly.. I think a week into it I'd maybe even ring the vet to see if she needed to go in for a visit..
