Basically i've never had tropical fish before, only things like goldfish etc, i've got the tank set up and everything and was just wondering what fish go well together, and which ones people would recommend Thanks

How big is your tank firstly, length? Don't get any neons yet even if you like them as they need an established tank really. Start with about 4 fish first and add gradually. Platies are hardy so get a pair of those and two Corydoras catfish as they're hardy and pick up any uneaten food.

Here's a link to tell you about platies. They come in lots of colours. I have red-wag, red body with a black tail, very nice.

Here are Corydoras catfish. Not expensive, very hardy. Most common ones are bronze, albino and peppered.

Wait I'm old so am still in feet and inches. Let me do a calculation.

So 40" long, nice size. You can have 40" of adult fish length in there, not counting the tails, but not at the beginning, build up gradually.

If you go for some platies and corys first, have a look at what other fish you like and then ask in this thread. Some are sold as community fish but are bullies or grow too big. Look on those sites I've linked to too.

You could get a gourami too, blue, golden or pearl one.

Here's the Pearl Gourami, lovely pretty fish. I'll say it again, don't get more than 4 or 5 fish to start with or you'll overload the filter and lose them.

I'd agree to go for some corydoras - but NOT pandas. Panda cories are so cute but they also don't seem to live ever.

I started off with some glowlight danios, very hardy breed, we've had 7 for three years now and in that time only one has died, very impressed with that as this was my first time at keeping fish and therefore they had to put up with me doing all sorts of things wrong at the beginning. I also have some guppies which are very nice, come in a good range of colours, and some neon tetras. Oh, and some harlequins as well.

Yeah I've kept fish for 30 odd years and tried pandas recently and they didn't last very long but lost no other fish. Not very hardy but the three I said are.

I was about to say danios. They're hardy Louise and there's pearl, zebra, glowlight and others. You need about 4 as a little shoal and they're mostly surface dwellers. Guppies are hardy too if you want those.

Do you know about floating the fish? Don't just tip them in but float them in the bag for 30 minutes so the temperature is then the same as in your tank. Open the bag and add a little tank water several times too.
