I ordered an ASDA Mobile sim off the website on Wednesday, was dispatched and arrived today, quite suprised at that!

Anyway i have an unlocked Nokia 3510i on the way within the next week or 2, will the ASDA sim work in that being as its unlocked and if it does it will probably say Vodafone UK cause of its age and cause ASDA uses Vodafone.

I'm off to ASDA today to get a sim. 8p calls and 4p texts, you can't go wrong . The sim will work in any unlocked phone.

That's worth knowing about; Vodafone is the only network that works in some remote places I visit regularly, but their pay-as-you-go is hideously expensive! I might make the switch before my next trip. Can you transfer an existing number? And are there any other cheap networks that are secretly Vodafone in disguise?

That's good news. My Vodafone number ends in "666", so it's quite amusing to give it out to people in Stornoway.

You seem enthusiastic about the subject. Do they charge by the minute or by the second? And slightly more importantly, how does the 20p per MB data work? I occasionally use my phone to send or receive email, which only takes a few KB at most. If I was to use 100KB of data, would I be charged 20p or 2p?

its charged per min so 8p a min and its 20p a mb so that's 0.02p/kilobyte for just sending emails and checking a mb will last you a long time. http://www.asda-mobile.com/?node_id=1.2

Just out of interest does anyone know where ASDA Mobile contact/call centres are based?

Thinking about leaving Vodafone for the cheaper calls.

Steve.

I'm waiting for Netto Mobile. 1p a minute, but you have to use a squeaky dog toy phone instead of a Nokia. Try unlocking one of those.. they just pop.

Not necessarily. Some of the plans that give you 300 free texts etc. when you top up may be cheaper for heavier users.

Yes, Asda mobile could work out more expensive compared to a bundle or bolt-on, unles you are a light user.

So no network offers bundles of minutes ? You are very wrong there! A simple look at a few network websites would have shown you are wrong. Just one example, 1000 minutes/texts to Your 10 numbers for £5.

There is nothing wrong with ASDA mobile, but you have to accept that for other people you can get better call rates.

vodafone is 20p a min to call http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatc...ageID=PPP_0034 t-mobile is 20p and they give you free credit at the weekend if you top up during the week. 02 gives you free Min's to landlines and 02 mobiles not good if you know no one on the network because you have to pay 15p a min to call other networks. orange is the best of the lot for people who talk or text free texts on dolphin or free mins to any network evenings and weekends with raccoon http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/yourplan/payasyougo/plans.if you call other networks a lot but don't text much asda is good for that if you text a lot you can get better.

Really? 300 minutes will cost you £24 on ASDA. On Three it will cost £15 (with 100 3 to 3 mins as well).

The truth is that one needs to choose one's tariff according to how you use your phone. ASDA is only cheap if you make a (relatively) small number of calls. There are much better deals for heavier users.

Before choosing a tariff one should right down how many minutes/texts and data you will use per month and work out the best tariff for you.

Thinking about switching my backup network from Vodafone to ASDA, i have an ASDA sim but how easy is it to register it in my name. I hear Vodafone PAYT customer service is outsourced by a 3rd party, what are they like at giving PAC codes?

Asda is very good, but still not as good as most sim only deals.

Let's compare Asda to o2's sim only deal:

Asda - £10 topup
125 minutes MIXED WITH
250 texts

o2 - £10 charge
150 minutes AND
300 texts
+ free voicemail
+ free extras each month

Asda's offer roles on, whereas o2's only last

I think you're talking about O2 there? That deal is good - only if your mates happen to be on O2 as well.
I agree that ASDA are cheap, but that's only really the case if you are an occasional user.

That was my point and I gave an example of a situation where another network was many many times cheaper. In a previous post I gave an example where xnet calls were cheaper than ASDA.

Just a quicky for anyone thinking of moving to ASDA Mobile...

Today i tried to activate a topup swipe card on my ASDA sim, i entered the card number and it accepted then it asked for the 5 digit security code on the front of the card (exactly like Vodafone does) and it kept saying "sorry, that code is not valid" then it tried to divert me to an advisor. So i tried again and i checked, double checked, triple checked and even quadruple checked! and every time it fails! So i have given up now. I'll stick to Vodafone in my backup phone, was gonna port that number to ASDA but i wont bother now!

What's happened to these top-up cards? When I last had pay-as-you-go a few years back, they were nice cards with raised credit-card style numbers. Now they're cheap-looking things with easy rub-off numbers and a grotty little scratch-me panel at the bottom.
