if one means Iphone, then No. With a new one due soon I think they are making enough out of the deal with apple.

Yeah, they only released the 3G in July. Don't expect one until at least then 2009.

The current pricing isn't great, but isn't that more a symptom of the way tariffs in the UK are pitched at heavy users rather than people who want a well-designed phone? If you don't need hundreds of minutes and texts you are expected to put up with a naff phone. |

I need a phone for email and web, i hardly ever need voice calls & txt's yet i have to pay a premium for a load of junk or pay silly money on an over priced PAYG phone that will will probable break within one year. Low users should have the option of trading in their free minutes for a discount on the monthly tarriff.

I don't think its a case of tariffs being pitched at heavy users. Rather, people seem to think that Maximum Minutes for Minimum Cost gives them the best deal. Regardless of the fact that they use far fewer than the maximum and would probably be better off with a lower tariff or even PAYG. There are even people who go out of their way to make sure they use up their minutes each month!

Yes... obviously PAYG has the advantage that if you only make one call a week you only pay for one call a week. However you also have to pay for the phone upfront rather than spreading the cost over an 18 month contract.
Even PAYG seems to be more geared towards people who want to get more minutes by topping up at a higher rate. What I'd like to see is a plan aimed at people who want a nice phone, don't want to pay it all in one go, and don't need a lot of minutes but would use a limited amount of internet access. It would probably cost a fortune though. |

I disagree. On Vodafone the N96 is £150 on the 18 month £35 contract which gives you 600 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data. The only advantages that the N96 has is the unlimited texts (iPhone has 500) and is £9 cheaper (iPhone 16GB £159). iPhone has the advantage of unlimited BTOpenzone and MyCloud.

My point was that not everyone sees a benefit in getting 600 minutes and 500 texts. The only lower-priced iPhone tariff is £30 for 75 minutes and 125 texts which just looks really bad value for money. Hence my comment that tariffs are pitched at heavy users - if you want 600 minutes and 500 texts then it's a good deal, but if you don't it's not.

In ANY context 7-8 months time isn't 'soon', not just when dealing with technology. Someone pregnant wouldn't say 'I'm due soon' when they're not due for another 7 months would they?

But yes, fully new hardware itteration, probably with things like an improved camera (Apple advertised a job for a mobile phone camera technologist a few months ago)? June/July 2009. Phazer |
