Would someone please explain. |

It wasn't cheesy when Obama said it but it certainly was when Louis said it

Personally I was really moved - actually blown away - by Barack Obama's win and especially by his victory speech and I reckon JLS might have been too, hence their over-joyed reaction to Louis' analogy (even if it was way OTT).
That being said, it was a lovely moment for them and I wish them well, even if I don't think they are are as good as they are being touted on the show (like a few other contestants this year)!

I read this completly differently.
JLS are black and mixed race as is Obama. In that sence it was a bit of a non PC comment and that is why Dermot was cringing and why JLS were amused too. |

They laughed because it was funny! Comparing something as big as winning the US presidency to winning the Xfactor! And I think 90% of the people watching, probably LOL as well!

How is it a non-PC comment? Are you saying that only black and mixed race people can say 'Yes, we can' now? That in itself is a pretty un-PC statement to me
.Dermot is just getting annoying...he's been picking on Louis these past couple of weeks and getting his opinion in when that isn't a presenter's job. We wouldn't be having any of it in Kate Thornton's day...now she was a professional. |

I thought Louis's comment was fine, it was just the extreme reactions of some people.
I'll admit, that I laughed when he said it though. |

can i (politely) ask why? i can understand why he is a symbol that a minority racial group can come from the underclass to becoming the ruler let alone ruling class, but as a politician the jury is very much out.
(But I admit I hadn't thought of the Bob The Builder connotations of 'Yes We Can!' and it makes me smile now. Maybe that's what went through the minds of JLS after all)

No ![]() Saying it to the only black males in the competition, if the connection is because they are black/mixed race like Obama, (and I think that that was the tramline that Louis' mind was on) is a tad non PC. I have no objection to it myself as I quite like a bit of non PC at times. |

I didn't actually hear the first bit, just the YES WE CAN! - which made me laugh because I though - as if he's quoting Bob The Builder!
I think the whole laughing thing was just how much of a big deal and how over excited Louis seemed to get! |

I know Obama is very much untested as a politician (I'd even go so far as to say the weight of expectation on him is one that he can probably never live up to), but for me his win represents a possibility of turning away from anti-intellectual, war-mongering, divisive and muck-raking politics. His victory was celebrated by Americans of all races and his speech was very inclusive. I hope he can deliver on his promises and I believe he will try to do so through co-operation rather than through confrontation. I think that idea gives a lot of people hope, hence the euphoric reaction of many to his victory. Just my two cents worth.
(But I admit I hadn't thought of the Bob The Builder connotations of 'Yes We Can!' and it makes me smile now. Maybe that's what went through the minds of JLS after all) ![]() i really don't like the noises he was coming out with about protectionism, diverting funding towards 'american jobs', when the reality is that will kick in a counter-cyclical trade war with other countries who respond in kind. plus if you divert resources towards employing US citizens in jobs where foreigners could make the same goods far more cheaply, it actually decreases living standards in the US. fingers crossed he doesn't go through with it strongly. you are completely correct that he's a totally different kettle of fish to the far right anti-intellectual palin in particular. as for the muck-raking, i think he was fortunate that he could take the higher ground in this campaign, with the way that the wind was blowing. had the republicans been in the ascendancy, it would have been much easier for the republicans to be magnanimous, and obama then left to muck rake as one of the few remaining options which might work. |

in answer to the OP it was funny because it was totally ridiculous to use barack obama's rallying cry to hundreds of millions of americans, urging teamwork, unity and the battle of the human spirit to enrich the lives of the people of both their own nation and the world, and to use that quote to try to talk about a 4-piece boy band's chances of winning a frivolous song contest on itv.
