He moralizes to some other kid in there that it's wrong to call an oriental a chink.
He goes on to say that you are born into ethnicity. But if you are gay, it is because you choose to be gay.
This seems to be a way to excuse himself from his own comments about gays.

Hmm...reminds me of somebody,..the name is on the tip of my tongue, but I can't quite place the name.

Anyway,..they both seem nice enough lads, and maybe they both didn't mean to purposely offend. But still,..it looks like they have been conditioned by some inherent bigotry.
But they don't seem to realize it.

I'll happily start it! He is a bigot and from what we have seen he is just as bad as Cameron. If he thinks homosexuality is a choice he clearly doesn't understand the first thing about it. Both poof and chink are pretty low down the offensiveness scale but the presumtion that there is any difference between them is madness. Also, what would his religous leaders think of his foul language in the diary room just now?

Where I am critical of Hassan, is not so much about him being against homosexuality (probably bad enough in itself, perhaps),...it's more about the moral high ground he takes.

He can call someone a puff.....but he will criticise someone else for using the term "chink".
As though he is in a position to give lessons on morality.

He even said to the other kid,.."I taught you a good lesson there, didn't I?"...urrgh...or words to that effect.


(So would it be okay if I chose to emigrate to China and officially become a citizen of China,....is it okay for Hassan to call me a chink then?)

For what it's worth, I know a lot of homosexual guys who call homosexual guys puffs too.

Try to remember they're kids and they've got little or no life experience outside their immediate ( and in the case of Hassan probably very insular) social circles. It would probably do Hassan more good than most to spend time with people from different backgrounds with different views and opinions. It's pretty obvious most of them are not past the age when they realise they might not always be right about everything.

I find it difficult to condemn an eighteen year old kid for having slightly blinkered opinions. You can guarantee that watching this back will give them all a crash course in humility.

Hassan seemed to contradict himself. He asked if he Paul wouln't mind him calling him a puff because sometimes he may forget. but then on the other hand berated Tommy for doing the same thing with the word chinky. What annoyed me more I think was that his attitude was that being gay was a choice whereas it wasn't a choice how he was born. Will Paul be able to educate him before he leaves the house or will he still be bigoted in his thoughts religion or no religion.

I can tell you from experience that there definitely can be a comparison.

In some circles derogatory tags are used in such an offhand casual manner.
I used to accept it,...until I realised that underneath, with some people, the truth was actually much more scary.

The point I just made above, is that some kids don't just grow out of it. Instead they carry on miseducating themselves.
If nobody bothers to point out things,..they'll just carry on as happy as larry.
They're 16 to 18 year olds,..old enough to do the things adults do..join the army, vote, etc..they're not beyond criticism.
I don't think I'm giving anybody a hard time.
I'm just highlighting an event that maybe worthy of discussing.

But anyway,...I didn't intend to talk about racial, or sexual stereotyping in itself,..some people would say it is a big deal though.

I think it's fair enough to be critical. I don't think we are forced to be any less critical of teenagers, than we are of 23 year olds.

That's what I was focusing on as well.
Not so much the use of terms to desribe sexuality or ethnicity,...but the way that Hassan defended one term, but criticised another.
And the choosing bit as well.

I may be wrong here, but do gay people choose to be gay? isnt is something inborn in them, I have heard gay people say they tried to be straight, or they wouldnt beleive they were gay and they would grow out of it, I think Hassan was very wrong in saying that kind of thing, yes some people do say puff in a joking way, but Hassan meant it in a sarcastic derogatory way, If any of you watched tonights episode on E4 last night you will see how many thought his remarks were offensive. As for the chinky remark, Tommy was refering to food and not race, well as far as I could make out any way, and he couldnt apologise more afterwards, he is a good lad and took he was wrong as soon has Hassan pointed it out, unlike Hassan who contiuned to say he was right about calling gays puffs.
