What age should dogs and kids mix?

Hey there,

I have been around dogs since I was about 7 and when my husband and I bought a house we got a dog. We had her for 2years but it didn't work, she was like the devil dog with me and eventually my husband too, we were forever trying to train her and then when our son came along, although she was always good so far, when she started bearing her teeth at me, I decided it was too much to risk with the son (he was crawling at this point)

Anyway, he is now 2 and a half and our youngest son is a year old next week, he is nearly walking. I have seen a Jack Russell cross who is 18months and I have fallen in love. I am at home all day so he wouldn't be alone.

I was just wondering on your opinions about kids and dogs because I don't want to get into it if it won't work but I don't want my kids to miss out on the fun and love from a dog. I was so relieved when our last dog went and I had truly been put off dogs but time has helped, I think.

I'm sorry to have rambled, I feel like it's a constant battle between my heart and head

Thanks in advance.

hi there! my kids are 16 months and nearly 4, and we are getting our first family dog tomorrow, a staffy x pup my 2 have been around dogs since birth, as the inlaws have 2, and mother in law also has a home-boarding service, so there's always dogs running about her house! so long as you have firm boundaries for both the dog and your sons, i think you will both get along well. this opinion is due for revision tomorrow, once loki arrives

That's lovely, I hope it all works out, my parents have 3 dogs but they live in a huge kennell outside (I don't like it but it's not my house) and my oldest loves them (2labs and a greyhound), I don't know!

i can see why !!!! our wee pup is a rescue dog too, as many of the fm's here encouraged me to head for dogs trust before meeting breeders, and im glad i did!

back on topic (lol!) - i think he's small enough that the wee one wont get knocked off his feet to often, and im sure you'll give him a happy loving home - best of luck!

Now I just have to convince hubby to let another dog into our lives because my hubby was devestated and he keeps saying never ever etc.

I have never lived in a house without a dog in it , my mum has had a dog at all times since i have been born.

I moved into my own house when my daughter was 3 almost 4 and i got a labrador then, imo a home isn't a home without a dog

And in answer to your question any age so long as the dog is good natured and the kids know not to annoy it
