Digital SLRs with preview on screen
What do you call the digital SLRs that you can take photos by looking at the screen and not through the view finder. I know they are not proper SLRs, but do they have a name? They look like SLRs, but I don't think you can change the lens.

I think you're thinking of cameras like the Canon S3IS, Panasonic FZ28 etc etc.
They get referred to by several names: Bridge camera. Super-zoom. Pro-sumer. They're all the ones that are bigger than a compact, with more features, but not as full featured (or expensive) as a dSLR. |

^^ True.
But to get the amount of variation of zoom in the optics you'd need to buy a few more lenses and suchlike which would soon start to hike the cost up. In normal daylight, a decent prosumer can just about keep up with a dSLR. In low/difficult light, thats when dSLR's really pull ahead. |

Thanks. They don't seem to have them in the shops, do they. And I can only find a couple of brand new ones on ebay.

Jessops certainly stock quite a few of them .... I think Comet do as well and my local Makro has decent deals on them from time to time.
You'll (almost) always get a better deal online though. I got mine (Canon S3IS .... now replaced by the S5IS but not much change so the '3' version can be a good deal now) from here: http://www.buyacamera.co.uk/ ... and would happily use them again. Excellent service. Far better getting one from them than ebay! |

Thanks. So what type of camera do they come under on that site?
So am I right in thinking you can't chnage the lenses, but you can add a flsh gun? |

I have the Olympus E-420. Fantastic camera. Small and light enough to replace a point and shoot with all the DSLR qualities. Olympus also makes some fantastic lenses as well. Plus you can use it through the screen, although I usually use the viewfinder as I find I can take better pictures by holding the camera more steadily. It also has a thing to keep the dust out when changing over lens which is very useful.

Take a look 'Which? Compare - best prices on 1,000s of products' on their website http://www.whichcompare.co.uk/
Under 'Cameras' and 'Technical Details' you should find all the answers. Amazon appear to have the best bargains but their stock is shrinking daily. |

What you want is a Bridge camera, which basically is a bit more than a compact but not as (potentially) complicated as a DSLR, this one below gives a good optical zoom of 12x and is currently very cheap at Tescos for a 12 megapixel £149
