If Rachel had to perform, Diana should have too
Diana may have had laryngitis, but the "severe" element attached to it is dubious given how she continued to speak coherently to camera. Previous competition entrants in both X Factor and American Idol who develop laryngitis do not speak at all - they write things down on cards. When Mariah Carey was asked about this on Xtra Factor she confirmed you do not speak, you give your voice complete rest.
Laryngitis is not a disease, or of itself an illness, it is inflammation of the larynx and vocal cords. The most likely explanation for Diana developing it, since she does not have a cold/flu, is that she has strained her voice by 'bending it like Beckham'. Two other female singers developed the same, but first Alex and then Ruth continued to perform with what they had. Rachel had a rough week, her spirit was broken, and on the day of competition she was the subject of front page headlines dragging up her past. She stood there like a shell singing "take a look at me now, I'm just an empty space" and fell to pieces, silent tears pouring down her face as she was judged. Her mental state and ability to perform was not much different than someone who had, for example, received news of a bereavement, and nobody would expect such a person to perform well, if at all. If Rachel was expected to stand on that stage and make a fool of herself vocally because her emotions affected her voice and made her sing off pitch (anyone's voice does so when overemotional - even a man can sound like a girl when he cries out) then IMO Miss Croak should have soldiered on too, with whatever she had. It's doubtful that she, the favourite and apparent "chosen one", would ever be voted off even if she had made a complete hash of things with half a voice and a downtempo arrangement. What has probably happened is that Simon didn't want the winner turning in an under par performance, he wanted to protect her development as a future recording artist by removing her from the contest for the week, then there'll never be a duff performance which can black her career copybook. |

Diana is extremely talented, Rachel is not. Therefore Simon makes an exception

I thought she was told by a DOCTOR that she risked permanently damaging her voice, thats why she didnt go on. She didn't sound good at all imo and it was the right decision for her health-wise, in terms of letting her comeback next week thats something else entirely. But she can't be blamed for anything that happened - it was the producers decision to allow her to miss a week.

Simon told Rachel that she's one of the best voices he had heard in over 10 years.

. She got a bad press! Wow! Shes not so tough now, not so street if she let it affect her. Because of this she got an easy ride and a much better singer was kicked out because she fell to pieces. Shes being given an easy ride because people fall for the emotion rather then the singing. Its X-Factor not Sob-Factor. |

I have sympathy for Rachael, but the circumstances are not the same.
The specialist said that Diana should not perform. Diana is a minor. The producers could not allow her on stage without completely voiding their liability insurance. (Leaving aside the moral issues regarding persuading/allowing a young girl to sing at risk of permanent vocal damage.) |

Oh and re Rachel, comparing her upset at her CRIMINAL past being revealed - well thats completely different to Diana's medical problems. Rachel's only upset cus of the bad publicity not because of her health!

I bet he regrets saying that now.
I think he's intelligent enough to see the difference in a performance of woman totally broken down in her confidenc e and a normal live show song performance. |

Are you sure we're not talking about St Rachel of Assisi, patron saint of Cat Burglars.
