Anyone else feel sorry for Ruth in light of this public frenzy over Laura?
Okay first of, I respect that Laura fans are upset with her going. I just want to point out, in no way did she deserve to be in the bottom two. Niether girls did. It was pathetic they were. However it's the name of the game. Neither got the public backing on Saturday.
Now with all these petitions and media coverage for Laura, I cant help but feel sorry for Ruth. Agree or disagree with me (but the overall concensus agrees) Ruth outsung Laura in the sing of. People can cry tactical if they wish but Ruth nailed her song where as Laura was average in comparison. For the claims of a fix and petition to bring her back is ridiculous to be honest. It's not like Laura went over someone like Daniel. Ruth in her own right is a terrific singer and fought for her place on Saturday. I personally think there would have been just as much of an outcry if Ruth had been sent backing. The judges were effectively in a lose-lose situation. I just really feel sorry for Ruth in all this. What with the media, petitions etc, I hope it doesn't knock her confidence and make her feel like she doesn't deserve to be there. She's got 120,00 hits now for KOHD. I hope she is made aware of this and at least some people think she deserved to stay. |

i totally agree with the OP. I feel very sorry for Ruth in all of this.
![]() She clearly outsung Ruth in the sing off. The youtube views and the polls re best in sing off would appear to back up the decision of the judges. What were the judges to do? Were they supposed to send home the person who was clearly the better in the sing off? I would have been outraged if they had!!!Blame the voting public for puting Laura in the bottom two, or blame the competition format that allows someone to stay based on a better sing off performance but don't blame Ruth My worry now is that Ruth may be in sing off again and give yet another exceptionally good, Purple Rain type performance but will be sent home because she was up against a favourite. When she goes out to sing there should be all to sing for otherwise there's no point. They may as well just send home the person with the least votes. I hope she manages to stay out of bottom two from now on. |

I agree, but I think Ruth is a tough and secure enough character to see it as 'Laura love' and not 'anti-Ruth' stuff.
IMO, Ruth did outsing Laura in the sing-off so it was a fair outcome. Yes it was a surprise that Laura was in the bottom two but it was the same for Austin the previous week. The GB voting public like 'cute' little boys - Ray, Leon and now Eoghan. I dont know why but it is how it is. |

I agree with this.
I was shocked on Saturday that Laura left, and didn't think either Ruth or Laura should have been in the bottom 2...but that was down to the public vote. Ruth totally outsang Laura in the sing off and therefore deserved to be saved. That is what the sing off is for after all and I do prefer this year's way where the contestants have to sing a different song. So yes, I do feel sorry for Ruth as I certainly don't think she deserved to go either and the fuss over Laura going is getting totally over the top. She will still have a career in music and will probably benefit from the fact that she left the X Factor so early and with so much publicity. |

Good thread.
![]() Hopefully Ruth is just far too busy to be reading some of the mindless hysteria which has been apparent since Saturday. |

Yes I do.
She's a very talented girl and they make it sound as if she's crap which she's not! Laura had the weakest sing-off and Ruth rocked everyones head off. She was the best. |

The only reason people were so surprised Laura left was because the judges have overhyped her since the start. I've enjoyed Ruth's performances every week, whereas Laura has been a bit hit and miss.
As for the public outcry; if people are so outraged that Laura has been sent home why did they not vote for her?? I'm willing to bet that most of the people complaining about the outcome did not bother to vote - so surely they have no right to complain

Very much so.
However Ruth has so much class and professionalism that she will go out and storm it this week. This week has a much better category so there is scope for her to have a much more appropriate song. |

I do too, Ruth is a VERY talented lady! She deserved to be saved on the night, as her performance of KOHD was far better than Lauras performance. I think the judges got it right. I do however think her confidence has to take a knock over all the frenzy surrounding Laura, but she has a good mentor, and no doubt will be kept away from any negative press.
I do understand the hype surrounding Laura though, she was another of my favourites, and it is a terrible injustice that she left the competition so early, especially when the likes of Daniel and Rachel are still there. |

People are being pathetic (and I'm a Laura fan). Anybody with ears could hear that Ruth was 100x better than Laura in the sing-off and all this 'tactical' vote stuff it very irritating to hear and puts Ruth down. The more this goes on, the more I like Ruth. I hope she makes the final!

i agree with the op. ruth outsang laura completely. yes, it can be argued that perhaps her lower register needs some work, but then so does lauras. plus, laura has terrible diction. i could never understand what she was singing
i think diana not being there affected lauras votes as i reckon they would split votes and people may have switched off after hearing diana wasnt singing and thus not vote for laura either |

I feel sorry for Ruth too. I am a Ruth fan, but I was also a Laura fan.
I have accepted Laura has gone and that is the way it goes. I do not know why people keep going on about how tactical the voting was, when Laura just did not get the votes. It is not the judges fauly Laura went, it was the public who did not vote for Laura |

I do feel sorry for her but the viewing public are a fickle lot and will probably have forgotten all about this by next week. It's just publicity for the show, innit.

I don't think that anyone could object to Ruth being saved at the end of the show - more that Rachel wasn't up there in the sing-off after her weak performance.

Neither deserved to be in the bottom 2, it was ridiculous in my opinion. However, I thought that Ruth was much better in the sing off and therefore deserved to stay.
She's my favourite singer, I hope she wins. She's not the favourite to win but I think she's got a chance. Laura deserved to get much farther and possibly be the winner which is why saturdays result was such a shock. Therefore I hope that Laura fans will now transfer their support onto Ruth and get behind her in the interests of this contest so that someone with a lot of talent can actually win this contest. I'm afraid in my opinion, Daniel and Rachel Hylton aren't up to it and are not quite good enough at this quite advanced point of the competition though they've done very well to get to this point. |

Despite being gutted and pretty disgusted that Laura went, I am also a fan of Ruth's and I am feeling sorry for her. However, I haven't seen anyone suggest that Ruth should have gone in her place... just suggestions that it was the wrong TWO in the sing off, and neither Ruth nor Laura deserved to be there.
But I do believe the sing off is a rubbish idea - one average or below average performance and you're out? Well Rachel has given 4 bad performances out of 5 and is still there! The competition is about finding a recording artist that could sell many, many albums. I believe that [as much as I like Ruth], Laura has more potential there and should have stayed. However, debating about whether the sing off is a good idea is pointless as this is how it is. It's a shame Laura lost out, and I'm very disappointed about it, but what I hear is that Ruth was better in the sing off and Laura went. That's it. I do feel sorry for Ruth, yes, but I feel more sorry for Laura. |

If she's in the bottom two next week it really is the last I'll watch of the X Factor. It's not entertaining when you're left with the less talented ones. It hurts my ears

Er am I missing something here? Petitions. For what? To tell the public how to vote?
They all sang - Daniel, Rachel - all of them, and the ones who got the least votes from the public were Ruth and Laura. They sang a song of their own choice, against each other in the sing off. Ruth put in the better performance, the judges vote reflected that, and Laura was out. Them's the rules. That's how it works. So what the so called media frenzy and petitions all the rest of it are about I don't know. The only way there would be any justifiable reason for complaining would be if Laura put in the better performance in the sing offs. But she didn't. Ruth blew her away, plain and simple. She wouldn't have ended up in the bottom two if the public had voted for her. They didn't. End of! |

With all this Laura thing, people seem to forget Cowell voted her off too (not forgetting Danni but that was of course because she is Ruth's mentor.)
It was the public who put Laura in to the bottom two, not Louis, and unfortunately Laura looked very shaken when it was announced and it affected her performance. Ruth on the otherhand did what she did the first time she was up - she put on an amazing performance and fought for her position. I think it would have been more insulting if she was voted off because they are, I think, supposed to judge it by that performance. I also think it makes the show ten times better that in the sing off they get to pick there own song! People should learn from Ruth - put on a show-stopping performance not a quite ballad...x |

From what I've seen, most of the to-do is more aimed at the fact that Laura was in the bottom 2 in the first place - I have seen very few places slamming Ruth for being kept in over her.
Of course Laura fans are going to be unhappy about what has happened, but most of the ones that I have seen (on here as an example) have been kind enough to say that neither of them deserved to be bottom 2. |

Neither girl deserved to be in the bottom 2 IMO, Ruth gave a much better performance than Laura in the sing off (who was good at the end). I felt sorry for both girls, you could see how upset Ruth was for Laura
