This from Denofgeek:

According to Paddy Power, the running favourite is currently Patterson Joseph, whose agent put down the earlier rumours to us of his being linked with the part. David Morrisey, shortly to appear in the Christmas special, is currently running as second favourite, with James Nesbitt, John Simm and Russell Tovey following in quick order. At the other end of the scale, the long bets are Christopher Eccleston at 40/1, Hugh Grant (again!) at 100/1 and Robbie Williams at 150-1.

The full list of current Paddy Power prices is…

3/1
Patterson Joseph

5/1
David Morrisey

6/1
James Nesbitt

8/1
John Simm

10/1
Russell Tovey
Anthony Head

14/1
Richard E Grant
Robert Carlyle

16/1
Alan Davies

18/1
Jason Statham (how cool would that be?!)
Aidan Gillen
Harry Lloyd

20/1
Ben Wishaw
Julian Walsh
Nigel Harman

25/1
Bill Nighy
Stephen Fry
Chiwetel Ejiofor

33/1
John Barrowman
David Suchet
Marc Warren
Paul Bettany

40/1
Christopher Eccleston
Joel Beckett

50/1
Dean Lennox Kelly

66/1
Christopher Villiers

80/1
Ricky Gervais

100/1
Vinnie Jones
Hugh Grant

150/1
Robbie Williams

For purposes of comparison, when speculation was rife back in June that David Tennant was about to flee the Tardis, these were the odds offered then by William Hill:

2/1
Robert Carlyle

4/1
Jason Statham

6/1
James Nesbitt

7/1
John Simm

10/1
Julian Walsh

12/1
Daniel Radcliffe

14/1
Nigel Harman

16/1
Bill Nighy

25/1
Catherine Tate

33/1
Billie Piper

Gambling, of course, is a terrible thing to do. But we might go and have a sneaky fiver on Aidan Gillen anyway…

I'd just like to point out, at 18-1, Mr. Harry Lloyd (I love the fact that bookies are putting odds on a rumour I started!) - but like the OP, I think Aidan Gillen would be AWESOME!

Thoughts?

I'm thinking of Ben Miles at 50-1 looks good.

There's a train of logic which I like surrounding him

What

Doctor Who in full on Transporter/Crank/van-Damme kung-fu action hero mode?

Dear God No!

Surely David Morrissey can't become the next Doc, it's just too obvious and would be a massive let down to the fans.

Nor can James Nesbitt, who, and let's be fair to him, would be the shittest doctor EVER

Does anyone know: When CE had said he was quitting, before it was announced that Tennant would have the role, was there much betting on him? Who was the favourite then? I'd be really impressed if anyone can remember, but I just wondered.

Stephen Fry would be good for a season.

It was before I was really into the whole internet community (the Doctor Who one, at least), but I definitely remember a few weeks before he was announced my mum had Casanova on, and said something like "He's supposed to be the next Doctor Who, but to be honest I don't like him that much". So there was speculation.

I can't imagine anyone predicted Eccleston, though.

I remember during the speculation about who would replace CE Eddie Izzards name was thrown about. Personally I think that would be amazing to see, but I'm probably the only one!!!

When CE left the role, the newspaper announcement (The Sun IIRC) said straight off he was going to be replaced by Tennant.

Not one person in that list jumps out as being a good choice to me. I really hope they pick some relatively unknown to do it.

I hope Paterson Joseph doesn't get it. Purely because the misspelling of existing Doctors is annoying enough without adding another easily misspelt name...

I just hope they gather 3-4 candidates for the regeneration filiming so the actual final choice will be at least a bit of a surprise.

18/1
Jason Statham (how cool would that be?!)
Aidan Gillen
Harry Lloyd

Have to say most of these i don't think stand a chance and shouldn't be betted on.

At 25/1 Chiwetel Ejiofor would make for a good bet.

It's not going to be a surprise at all, series 5 will start filming 4-5 months before DT's final episode, and we'll know who it is long before then.

Surprised Sean Pertwee isn't on that list, as it was said he was the only person actively trying to get the part a few months back.

Why would they be dissappointed? I am a massive fan, and I am positively relishing the prospect of a Morrissey doctor. The man is an incredible actor.

Tennant was announced at 1-10 favourite but Eddy Izzard and Bill Nighy were also in the running. Here's the BBC news from the day in 2005...

Looking at that long list - I would choose Paul Bettany or Aiden Gillan. Not that it will happen. I also liked Harry Lloyd - but he would be better as a 'companion' (evil or not....he could be like Turlough was in the 80's).
Whatever happens, I'll still be watching it whoever takes over the role next year [ok - the year after, but we'll know who it is by then anyway!].

33 to 1 for John Barrowman.
How would JB become the Doctor? He's already Captain Jack. That really would be a case of jumping the shark.

I know it's never going to happen but i'm surprised the usual female contenders for the part haven't came up in the odds, thought Catherine Tate would have been up there at least.

Also in the whole excitement over who is going to be the next Doctor it seems that the identity of the new companion has been forgotten about or have I missed out on something?

Anthony Head or Bill Nighy would be good.

Gosh, Christopher Eccleston at 40-1...hmm...!

Hope you got on at that price - he's 8/1 now. Also Richard Coyle's come in from nowhere to 6/1 - he'd make an excellent doctor i reckon.

Vinnie Jones?

Julian Barrett for Dr Who - he'd be ace!
