Which do you think is more important when it comes to bringing in the votes and progressing through the show- a great performance/great voice or having a selection of well known and well loved songs? Are poor song choices enough to prevent a talented singer from progressing? Can good song choices propel contestants further than their talent suggests they should?

Is having The X Factor about being given the right songs to sing?

Has to be a mixture of a great song and a good not excellent voice would get you through. Whatever the target audience like the most and what would get them to vote.

I would say the most important thing is the actual performance.
Even if it's not a good song and the voice isn't great, the performance can make it super by a confident look, a charisma etc.

As long as they stick with themes it will always come down to the song choice. Someone can be talented but not be able to sing disco, big band, Mariah and all the other themes equally well. No real world singer is expected to do this anyway.

A talented singer can make most songs work for them as Diana has, and others clearly haven't

While well known songs help sometimes when it is to well known it becomes kareoke.
At other times a song that is not well known when delivered with a great performance can do wonders for a contestant.

talent. Laura proved that she had little of it when she tried to copy leona and sing somewhere over the rainbow

Both are important, but talent is more so. I think there's much more to the song choice than just that - there's the arrangement to take into consideration. If it's a crap arrangement, it won't matter how good the singer is, they'll sound dull and the performance won't be credible if they don't enjoy the arrangement either. The mentors have so much control over that kind of thing, it's no wonder the singers get frustrated, because they can end up being voted off just because a song has been chosen for them that they don't like, and they have to sing it in an arrangement that doesn't ring true to them, AND they have stupid dancers or people on skates to contend with. The whole thing then distracts the audience, who, for whatever reason, decide they're rubbish. On top of that, there are the judges' comments, which can make or break the voting - and they know it. It's all very well the judges getting angry with the viewers for not voting for the better singers, but they do need to take some responsibility for the comments they make. Because, like it or not, the majority of the people watching, who pick up their mobile phones and vote, don't really understand the game at all. They're being manipulated and exploited just as much as the contestants are. The only people who win, in the end, are the music producers. The Simon Cowells and the Louis Walsh's of the world. As for the rest, it's just unpaid labour.

I think this is why the sing-off scenario is working better for the good singers this year. They're not just re-doing their previous performance, they're giving a new one, and one that's their choice. Much better scenario all round, because they get to show off what they can really do. That's why Ruth has stayed both times she's been in the bottom two - she's proved how good she is when the chips are down.

neither performance nor talent are particularly important.

likeability is very important - people will be happy to vote for someone they actually like, and the running order is also very important. the bottom two acts are almost always from the first four performers on the night - the weeks where austin and scott went it was the first two acts who went. i think the only act that has ever been in the bottom two when on last is ashley a couple of years ago.

Did you miss the word 'good' in there by any chance?

Falsetto is pretty difficult to pull off and stay in tune though. Just sayin'
