I don't breed cats but I'm still in touch with one of my cats' breeders eight years later. I shouldn't think there is any money in it except for the unscrupulous ones who have several breeds and churn out kittens with no thought for it's pedigree or what other cats might be in the pedigree.

Some of them are a bit weird, that we met, but all meant very well. One had a thing about allowing cats outside, for instance, so prepare your poker face for any daftness.

Yep. Breeders like the one that handed my Layla - with her undershot jaw and no nose - into rescue when her last litter died because she had a womb infection

According to the rescue, her kittens dieing saved Layla's life

As with dogs though - there are good breeders out there. Just do your (mum's) homework

I'm sure a bit of intelligence whilst on the phone to them can get the general picture. I spoke to about 10 or so in our search for a Maine Coon kitten. Spoke to several barmy cat ladies, but pretty sure they were harmless, and kind to cats. We finished up with a fine healthy kitten, so our search was a great success. I presume you'd be after some form of pedigree to go to a breeder for? Check general breed health, and what to look for before viewing.

Our breeder is wonderful. I can't think she makes much money out of it as she cares far too much for her cats. For instance, our Otto was very ill as a little kitten, and the vet had given up on him. Although, she said that she did not expect us to take him and she would give us back our deposit, she spent two weeks nursing him back to health, feeding him every two hours with a syringe.
He is now healthy and strapping, and even goes back to the breeder for his holidays. If you are looking for a british short hair, PM me and I can pass on her details to you.

Where did you get him/her from in the end? My two came from opposite ends of the country.

There's always plenty of kittens available at rescue homes ie Cats Protection League, Blue Cross, RSPCA.

Got ours from an odd couple in Petersfield. He's a lovely little chap, well 3kg chap actually, I should have taken a photo of him sat on the bathroom scales! His tail weighs 100g, the scales fluctuated when he picked it up and put it down on the floor.
