Nikkai 3.5 inch digital recording TV A12HY - problems

I have recently bought a Nikkai portable recording digital tv. The instruction book is brief to the point of being useless.

I can't find any reference to this product on the web except for the website of the shop that sold it to me. I have queries in with their technical help desk but have little faith..

Here are two of my gripes,

1) The TV uses an SD card. The unit can record onto this itself, or, it is claimed, it can to play other AVI files. Having tried many converters I can't find any form of AVI file that the unit will play back. Does anybody have any idea how I can work out exactly what type of file the unit will play and then how to get something into that format. If anybody is a whizz on this sort of thing maybe I could send you a file recorded by the unit..for analysis ??

2) In TV mode I have a choice of three different aspects, 16:9, Total Zoom, and Vertical Zoom. But when playing back something recorded earlier it seems to fixed on Vertical Zoom ?!?! in other words all squashed up. I guess this query can only go out to anyone else who has this product and might have found a way around this. But alas I am starting to think I am the only one who has bought one !

Hope someone can help

Faulty product, return it Maplin or phone their technical helpine 0906 302 1353. The staff aren't there to give you all the answers you're after, they're there to sell and advise on your purchase, not after sales care.

If anybody else ever buys one of these TV's and has a similar problem with AVI files I have the answer now from the manufacturer.

I also have a software update which allows radio stations to be picked up (as was meant to be the case out of the box...!)

I recently bought one of those TVs also. I was impressed with its ability to pick up TV channels with the internal antenna. However, I have been unable to pick up a single radio channel. Where can I get the software to scan for these channels?

Contact the manufacturer like I did through this website.

http://www.asuka-semi.com.tw/

Ask them for the updated code (PME390S.upd) that can support DVB-T Radio.

Please tell me ......do you find that very often when you turn it on the TV has forgotten all the TV stations it had previously found and you have to wait for a full search to be done ?

PS...there is only a sales desk e-mail on that website...but that seemed to work fine for me !

Hmm I thought about buying one of these for my parents as they hate missing the news when they go places, but this thread kind of puts me off.

Apart from being fixed in vertical zoom on recorded programme playback I don't have any other issues with it now (oh and the channel retuning thing...)

On the plus side,... it wasn't that expensive given what it does (I haven't seen anything else this small that records freeview tv). The picture quality is amazing both live and recorded,..sometimes I think the picture is clearer than my 37 inch LCD ! The TV reception is very good, I can get 60+ channels crystal clear. However I am 5 floors up and can see a tv mast out of my window... The sound is very good too...digital and clear....but sometimes not very loud which means to use it on a train for instance I need to use the in ear style of earphones.

I have not had a lot of success using it on the move with the aerial as the signal breaks up a bit in built up areas. But playing back previously recorded stuff gets me through my morning commute.

I could have taken it back and got a refund for the few issues i have had, but I decided the bugs are outweighed by the good points. In any case I don't think there is anything else available to get tv/video on the move without lots of fiddling around or additional expense.

OK, thanks, I might reconsider then. It does seem a good price at the moment, £120.

Thankyou, we all try (Well i do) to help as much as i can with questions and if i don't know look at instructions/web and other people i work with and if anything comes back then we try and solve the problem if its something simple.

Off topic, but a forreign man came in a few days ago and whistled at me like a dog to go over, normally i would not have gone but i was feeling nice. His english was not very good. He says "is that (pointing at a multimeter on display) that one?" (pointing at the price ticket underneeth the item, quite clear and was seperate to all the others as they all have their own wall stand kind of thing). I told him yes it is, he then goes through, are you sure it is that one, yesyesyes !

Then he said. what about that one? Whats the difference between them two, can i do this with that one?

I start to tell him that i don't really know anything on multimeters and nor do the people i work with know too much, we are not emplyed to know what every single item does and differences between them.
I get both boxes out for them and look on the back and show him then put them back.

He asks something else, as to which i do not know, something i wouldnt even think of knowing and just said to him 'im not sure on that one'

"why do you work in an electrical store"
"why do you work here if you do not know"

and he then walks off,

hmm, made me annoyed but

Sorry im not help op, only seen one of these sold for a christmas prez so don't know of any problems they may have.

The firmware update for radio stations ect. can be found on "http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=224765".

Just download it to your sd card and go to "system settings" on the devices main menu, then "software upgrade".

I contacted maplin regarding the avi problem and had this reply:

"Thank you for contacting Maplin Technical Support,

All of the information that we have access to states that this is only compatible with its own recordings, MP3 files or JPEG images."

I think there must be a solution......HELP!!!

Klovibond, I just messaged you about the AVI file issue

And regarding the channel retuning...I have found that if you switch the unit to be fixed on either built in or external antenna it will keep the channels longer, ..usually up to the point that you switch to the other antennea.

With the antenna on 'autoswitch' I have to retune almost every time I turn the set on.

I wouldn't worry about that. The manufacturer told me they were not planning any updates anyway....

Are you enjoying the vertical zoom video playback as much as me ?

Sadly this sort of lack of ongoing support is typical for Maplin
