O2 Removed the limitations on GPRS WAY on O2 Pay & Go?

Has anyone else noticed that it looks as if O2 have removed the limitations on what can connect to O2s GPRS for O2 Pay & Go Customers?

I've previously only been able to get web browsing (either via phones included browser, or Opera Mini) & Google Maps to connect with other apps like Fring, eBuddy, Google Mail, Windows Live Messenger & MXit refusing to connect. I heard this was down to "mobile web" (some refer to it as plain GPRS) not being available to Pay & GO customers, but instead something that some people referring to as GPRS WAP being available.

For some reason i tried to connect using Fring last night, and surprisingly it worked! I then tried MXit & Windows Live Messenger and they all connected with no problem.

For me this is great news, as i can now also check/send e-mail from my phones (Nokia E51) built-in e-mail facility without having to be within Wifi coverage. I just hope this is not temporary or an error.

It wasn't that O2 limited what could connect, but they only allowed PAYG customers to access through their WAP Gateway (port 9201), so anything which used a different port doesn't work. There is a way around this, and that is to use an HTTP proxy, which will allow things like Opera Mini and Gmail to connect. In fact, this is what O2 did, to get Bluebook working on PAYG.

I will try this and see if O2 have removed the restriction on PAYG customers, I thought they might because the the new XDA is available on PAYG and would be useless without a data connection.

I just tried it, and it works! You can access the full internet without using a proxy. Opera Mini can connect using a socket connection, which is much faster than the HTTP proxy.

I also noticed on the O2 website that they are rolling out a new mobile internet homepage.

Yeah I'm very pleased with this. Hopefully its permanent.

I furst discovered it when using Google Mail 2 on Monday night, and noticed it could connect, but assumed it was a new version and they'd changed the connection.

And to think that i was considering going Pay Monthly (Simplicity) and that unrestricted GPRS was one of my reasons)

Thanks also for explaining the reason for the limited access. Never could understand how was caused

It was really a matter of O2's policy than a technical limitation. I think that makes O2 the last of the networks to turn off their walled garden.

Perhaps this is related to the fixing of the Youtube and Facebook problems on the 3G Iphone a few weeks ago on Pay And Go maybe.

It could be, I wonder whether O2 will increase the Web Bolt-On allowance?

Yes, i'm aware it wasn't a technical limitation, but raather the policy they had. I guess my use of the term "limitation" may have been incorrect. I use it as there policy for Pay & Go users regarding WAP resulted in limitations on the ways in which it could be used

What problems were iPhone Pay & GO users having?

On the subject of iPhone Pay & Go users, why is the £10/month Web & Wifi Bolt-On only available to iPhone users?

This is fantastic news. I'm hunting for a new phone and one of the reasons I want one to is to use the mobile web on it more often for accessing stuff like email bebo google maps etc.

Brilliant news indeed

Hey Riley before o2 sorted it Facebook and Youtube wouldn't load through Pay And Go on the Iphone they would just keep trying to load then timeout plus I'm not sure why the Web & Wifi Bolt on is locked to the Iphone perhaps its due to the 12 month free access to the Bolt on that Pay and Go Iphone customers at the moment I'm in month 3 now.

Hey

Thanks for explaining the problems.

Yeah i know its free for 12 months, but its listed on o2's bolt-on page as being available for £10/month. I was so close to signing up for use on my newly purchased Nokia E51, them i saw it was iphone only

The Web bolt-on is £7.50 while Web & Wifi (available only to iPhone users) is £10.

No. You need to have the "Web & Wifi Bolt-On" which costs £10/month to connect the the Wi-Fi hotspots However, the Web & Wifi Bolt-On is only available to Apple iPhone Pay & Go users. No idea why they're restricting to to iPhone. I'd be happy to pay £10 to access it with my E51

Its quite difficult to do that much web browsing on a phone. I use it for at least two hours a day and download music and videos a couple of times a week. I rarely use more than 90Mb a month.

That was in a month, I was downloading lots of software at 5mb a time. It has only happened the once, since then I've kept it to 100mb to 150mb.
