In appreciation of Genesis
Yeah, I know - Genesis have a rather mixed bag of supporters, some preferring the Gabriel Era, some the later albums of the more 'pop' Collins era.
My personal Genesis album love is up to and including Duke - after that they have some good moments, but generally the albums have too many 'pop' tracks for my taste. Favourite albums? Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, A Trick of the Tail and Duke. |

I've only got "Selling England" and "Trick of"... Trick is my fav of the two. I didn't like it when they went pop but there again there a couple of later Genesis tracks I like .

I started the wrong way round with Genesis, I was given a copy of the hits album (Turn It On Again?), grew to love that and then found I liked alot of the earlier stuff too.
I think my favourite album is, without a doubt, Duke and some of my top tracks would include: Robbery, Assualt & Battery Fading Lights The Cinema Show Watchers of the Skies The Knife Domino The Brazilian Eleventh Earl of Marl TBH, it's Tony Banks supreme songwriting and keyboard skills that makes it for me. Seeing them at Twickenham in 2007 was just awesome. (A 25yr old fan) |

If memory serves, 'Duke' was the first Genesis album that I ever listened to, introduced to me by a mate of mine back when the album was first released. The rest, as they say, is history.

I totally agree Genesis were good up until 'Duke' then got too commercial (although side 2 for me has already got too many ballady tracks on it). I bought 'Genesis' for 'Down By the Sea' but didn't listen to it much otherwise.

I like both the Gabriel and Collins era Genesis. Funnily enough I also love a lot of the solo work by both Gabriel and Collins. But I prefer Gabriel over Collins.

Selling England is one of my favourite albums. I loved that era, and never really got into the Collins band, although they did some good stuff at times.

Phil Collins is one of the best in this genre, drummer that is and that's what he should have stuck to. I saw Genesis 13 times ( 12 of them with Gabriel ) from Woodville Halls, Gravesend to Earls Court. I even joined their fan club in the early days.
It was called The Giant Hogweed club or something like that.I bought all of their records up to Duke but probably should have stopped at Wind and Wuthering. It's a rare week that some Genesis isn't played in this house.

I think they peaked with Trespass, but then I love Ant Phillips' solo albums too.
Supper's ready is superb though, The Lamb is underrated and Trick of the Tail is a fine album. |
