Question about bottom two internationally

Hello
I have a question about the people who tend to get into the bottom two in other SCD's around the world (ie DWTS etc). Here in the UK, there always seems to be one very likeable, charming, but bad dancer who goes much further than their dancing talent would suggest they should. John Sargeant is a classic example of that this year in that his general charm has boosted his popularity, and now the judges' constant annoyance with him is only helping that.
My question is, does this happen around the world, or is it a strictly British trait to support the underdog??

They don't really have a bottom two anywhere else in the world. It was brought in last year in the UK precisely to avoid this happening (John staying in over better dancers)but it seems to have back-fired on them a bit in that more people are voting to keep the under-dog in regardless.

Elsewhere it's just the normal voting procedure and the person with the least votes goes.

Cloris Leachman who is 82 was voted in for several weeks in the US DWTS.

Have watched her clips. Apparently better dancers like Toni Braxton (sp?) left before the 82-year-old lady, who, to me is a real firecracker.

Was she a good dancer SDO?

Not really no.
In fact, the week after Toni left and after Chloris had danced - Len, at her judging said that he thought it was a shame that other more able dancers had been knocked out but she was still there.

Sound familiar

YES! It happens here also -I remember in season one, the mayor of Invercargill Tim Shadbolt, came 3rd in the comp and he was so so bad! But he was just so lovely everyone kept voting him through!
Then in season 2, another politician Rodney Hide -who was absolutely atrocious -ended up coming 4th... he even dropped his partner on her head/shoulders during a live show and all of the judges gave him one lmao

The last couple of seasons haven't been too bad though, people always seem to vote the politicians through. Especially if they're rubbish. It must be a humiliation thing

Oh, she was RUBBISH. But at least she seemed genuinely enjoying her dancing with a rather handsome looking (and quite mature with a funny-sounding name) pro partner.

Perhaps therein lies the difference between the Americans and British regarding what is a 'great personality'.

Bear in mind she's eighty two!

Corky is willing to make a fool of himself just to make Cloris look good. Now that's a partnership.

Give me Cloris over John any time. She definitely exudes more enthusiasm than John had (or dare I say, ever will).

I realise she's a mature lady, but she was able to kick her foot as high as her shoulders in that jive! They could have pulled off something a little more dance-based and a little less acroabtic and reliant on humour. That was what made me cross - Cloris didn't seem to NEED to dance like John

But I thoroughly agree that Corky is a shining example of how to behave when your partner is not all that capable, and should be given his own niche in the Church of SCD next to St Kristina of Rihanoff

Someone please remind me...

Was it in Poland where someone was really bad, got a 2 from two of the judges and an 8 from the other one who happened to be going out with the celebs Dad?

Facts may be muddled but it was something like that.

ETA - Found it on Raphaels site. It wasn't an 8 it was a 9! Youtube of it is sadly no longer available.

The scores received from the judges were 5 9 7 2. Imagine that happening here?!?

Dear oh dear that was just embarrassing . I mean John can be funny but this no. It also is very unfair on the pro, instead of perfecting the jive he has to try and think up ways of camouflaging Cloris.

God, me too! Cloris was amazing, hilarious, game for anything. She is one of my favourite contestants on DWTS ever. The tears of laughter would be pouring down my face when I watched her!

I think they would probably prefer to share the one niche!

I remember seeing that! Bizarre!

Then again, the days when Len gives nothing lower than a 9 can't be too far off.....
