3 Mobile SIMs barred in Unlocked Phone
Has anybody else had a problem in the last few days where 3 Mobile have suddenly decided to enforce their rule that you can't use a 3 mobile SIM in a non-3 phone if it isn't a full 3G phone.
I'd been using my SIM in an unlocked phone for 4 months (my original phone was overheating, and they refused to replace it unless I trekked back to where I bought it (which wasn't convenient). Suddenly I had a text warning me the SIM would be disabled - and although I tried to convince them that I was happy with a 2G service (I don't have the data option anyway), they insisted in locking it - meaning I'm having to pay for a service each month that I can't use. They don't seem to see that this is a problem to me - just repeat their rules, and offer to sell me a new 3G phone at considerably worse terms than I could get in a 3 store. I wonder if they are only doing this for contract phones, or will start applying it to PAYG too - I can see how it gives them a chance to generate more revenue from phone sales / contract extensions. |

I trialled 3 a few years ago on PAYG, and found the 3g service appalling. So I put my 3G SIM into a few 2G phones, and found at the time that some Motorolas would work, but Nokias did not. A few months later my Motorola would reject the 3 SIM as well.
I think they've been trying to enforce this for years, but have to keep fine tuning the criteria, and every few months some more 2G phones are spotted and locked out. I guess that 3 have additional overheads for calls carried on the Orange 2G network, and this is a method for them of reducing costs. |

If your three phone went faulty ,
why didn't you get them to collect it , repair or replace it ? |

It's because their network is pure 3G. Any 2G stuff is on a roamed network which they then have to pay for. They only want you to roam onto another network when you can't get a working 3 signal. This is why they have that rule.

Its not really a new thing, Three have been doing this for years. The contract says that you will use the SIM in a phone supplied by Three and that they will disconnect you if you don't.

They even gave me a very cheap tarrif for contact sim only, a retention deal that cost £5 for the year including 500 free minutes and 100 texts. I think this is because my bills used to be about 60 a month and they knew that I would spend outside of the free allowance anyway, and I'd been a customer since the startin 03/2003. My point being, they said it's ok to use a non firmware branded phone, the only thing that doesn't work is the free MSN client that they provide because it needs three firmware, otherwise you have to buy the other version. If you get a three branded phone it will always favour 3 over the 2g orange roaming signal, in fact you don't get the option to force 2g with most 3 firmware. If you have an unbranded phone you can, but if you do set it to 2g all of the time, over many months 3 are going to block you I should image. The reason being they have a billion pound network of their own that they have put money into and has the most 3g coverage of any network, in addition they are expanding it with T-mobile to 97% population over the next 2 years. They don't want you using Orange in 3g areas because Orange charge them for that use. |
