Hi all

I have 3 TVs in my flat which have all received perfect DTV signals for well over a year, since I moved in. Around 3 months ago, the signal just froze one evening before disappearing altogether. I could still receive analogue signals of the basic terrestrial channels but only very poor quality. This happened on all 3 TVs for around an hour before the signal returned to normal.

This has been ongoing for around 3 months now and happens every day, regardless of climate / weather conditions. It usually "goes" at around 8-9am (i.e. before I go to work), is fine when I return until about 8.30pm then usually doesn't return until some time through the night. I don't know exactly how it behaves during the day but it is common for the signal to go when I'm home on a Saturday afternoon.

2 of my TVs are relatively new Samsung models. These typically show a signal strength of 85+ and bit error level of 0 when the signal is normal. However, when the signal goes, the strength drops to 10 and the bit error level is also 10. My final TV does not have integrated TV but the external Sony freeview box also detects "poor" signal quality and strength and can't get a DTV signal.

To make matters more confusing, I stay in a block of 9 flats, 4 of which suffer from this problem. The 4 flats are all located on the same face of the building but all 9 flats are serviced by the same antenna. We've complained to the factors who have sent an aerial engineer to check the antenna via the service cupboard. Needless to say, our signal was perfect when he arrived and inevitably, the engineer did not detect any fault on either occasion.

We really have no idea on i) what more we can do or ii) what is causing the intermittent nature of the problem. If anyone can provide any help, advice, suggestions or even ideas as to temporary remedies, they would be most gratefully received.

I have pondered getting Sky but not sure if this would be a waste of money if it would be likely to suffer from the same problem.

Thanks in advance,

Russell

Hi,
I had a similar problem a couple of months ago at a block of flats where four flats suddenly one evening lost all TV signals. The main distibution amplifier was checked and all outputs proved to be working fine, After much searching i found a secondary 4way amplifier in the loft space of a top flat where the occupant had passed away a few weeks earlier and because the amplifier was fed from the lighting circuit in the flat and the family of the deceased had turned off the electricity in the flat after emptying it the TV signal went.
It could be that you may have a secondary amplifier somewhere that is wired incorrectly to a switched supply or a circuit that has a timer switch fitted or someone may be turning off their electicity at times to conserve energy costs!! I hope this helps.
