When to castrate?
My kitten is around 4 months old. He is a housecat, and I really want to keep him this way. I have noticed his gentleman bits have grown rather a lot. In fact they are bigger than any cats I have ever seen (sorry, TMI)
When is the best age to have a male cat neutered? |

Gentleman bits! How polite!
![]() I have two male Maine Coons. One of them came to me as a four month old kitten and he had been neutered by his breeder at 13 weeks. She had all the kittens which were to be sold as pets, neutered at this age to prevent her line from being bred indescriminately. Also early neutering is supposed to make the cat grow bigger and as Maine Coons are big cats, it is meant to help with that although I don't know how true that bit is. I tried to get my vet to neuter the other early and he finally agreed at about 17 weeks. I think he was worried that if he didn't do it, I'd find another vet who would. Why don't you see if your vet will neuter him now. It will save all that worry that he might start spraying soon.

Thanks PIDGAS. I don`t want the stench of tom cat pee in the house! I will give them a ring in the morning.

I think it's usually recommended for male cats at about 5 and a half months - we've had all our cats done at about this age and never had any problems.

Don't know if this might help - I should think the vet will be able to tell more or less how old he is. One of our cats was a chancer who walked in through the cat flap one day, sat down, looked at us and said 'I live here now!' The vet was able to tell us more or less how old he was and I think the younger they are the easier it is to tell. Hope you're enjoying your kitten - I envy you because they're so adorable at that age! |

He is so loving and funny. I am only slightly scratched, and I have had him nearly 2 months. I am very lucky
