Hamster while on holiday
Taboo

My mum will be looking after our hamster for a week and a half. Is there anything I can do to make things easier for the hammy and my mum,as my mum isnt used to handling hamsters(is a bit squeamish about them TBH). The hamster also isnt used to my mum.
Would the wheel be exercise enough?,as mum will probably be unable to get him out to use his ball.
Would it matter if he wasnt handled for a week and a half?
Sorry for all the qs but getting a bit worried now.

Hi Taboo

I leave both of my Syrians with my in-laws whenever we go away on holiday- usually for a week.

Their cages get cleaned on the day we leave, so they're fresh for the next seven days or so.

You're lucky your hamster even uses its wheel- mine won't touch theirs! I'm quite sure that is exercise enough, and keeping them in the cage doesn't tend to do them any harm in the long term, don't worry. I find mine are just that wee bit more grateful to see me when I come home!

Have a nice holiday and don't worry about hammy too much. They are low-maintenance and as long as they get fresh water daily, and maybe ask your Mum just to talk to them whenever they're awake, they'll be great.

Thank you for the reassurance Millie
Elvis has a rotastack cage with the wheel attached but will use it as his toilet aswell Will advice mum to maybe hold a book against the gap while it gets cleaned, and leave her 2 of his houses,so she can alternate while he's in his wheel.
Sad to say but im going to miss the little mite when we're away

ps,my mum will be over tomorrow. Have read about maybe getting her to handle some kitchen roll then putting it in his cage so he gets used to her scent. Should I do this?

Elvis. Great hamster name! He'll be fine for a week without handling or going in his ball.
