I don't know if this is the best place to post this but here goes..

my mac is my main source of music & video, and I have it hooked up to my hi-fi which is on the other side of the room.

Recently I've upgraded various parts of the system such as bi-wiring the speakers, and using some top notch Cambridge Audio interconnects. The difference is certainly noticable.

Problem is I can't seem to find high quality 3.5mm to RCA cable to connect the mac to the amp - it needs to be around 7 meters long.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've got around £150 to play with on this.

A tenth of that budget will buy you this which you can connect to a 2 metre 3.5mm stereo jack to 2 phono plugs...if you're not satisfied with that your local small TV repair shop could make one up for you in any custom length I should imagine.

Doesn't your MAC have a digital audio out. rather than analogue. Using that to connect the two would be preferable - especially given your budget. Although if you want to spend £150 on a single interconnect of any description leads me to say that I've got just the right thing. Send me £150 and I'll send it to you. (I don't, but I'd be down my local electricians to buy one for £15, giving me a wonderful % return.)

That could require A) a 7 meter RCA or optical cable, and B) A dedicated DAC - very expensive!

I'm using a similar set up of cable at the moment, and it sounds awful. So much detail is lost. If I hook up to the amp using (an all be it shorter) Cambdrige Audio Atlantic cable, it sounds much better. So I've after something like that, only longer.

Hi,

I have used this company many times in the past and always found them very good.

Heres a link;

You said it was to a HiFi - so why would you need a separate dedicated DAC? All modern amps have inbult DAC converters.

Or are you saying that your Mac doesn't have a digital output?

Also, don't get hung up on a 7 meter cable. I use one half of a good quality RCA, 10 meter, two channel cable without any problems.

Hi Rob, not everyone uses a decoding AV amps.

There are still plenty of high quality analogue only Hi-Fi amps around. From a Hi-Fi purist POV it's much better to keep digital signal decoding and processing away from the pre-amp section of an analogue amp.
